Re: The Buddha and Temporal "Neccessities".

Thanissaro Bhikkhu's point in a nut-shell is that not-self is a teaching to be used - not a metaphysical statement. This doesn't mean being "agnostic" about the self - that would imply that the Buddha thought that it could be either way - which falls into the wrong view similar to the &qu...

Re: The Buddha and Temporal "Neccessities".

I have read that the Buddha remained agnostic about the self. What anatta means, and I think this is very important, is that none of the five aggregates are self. I tend to take Thanissaro Bhikkhu's view on this that he gives in "No-self or Not-self?": http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/au...

Re: If you aren't doing Vipassana...

are you mindful and/or do you concentrate on a certain meditationobject like the breath or something else? I'm a little reluctant to touch on mindfulness, given that some teachers say samma sati is remembering what you need to remember to get your chosen task done. And then we have the teachers tha...

Re: Pali Resources

I'm a beginner with Pali, but I find this to be a great resource: http://buddhism.lib.ntu.edu.tw/BDLM/en/lesson/pali/lesson_pali3.jsp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (The text of the Dhammapada, with syntactical and lexical analysis, and full audio) I can't imagine a better ...

If you aren't doing Vipassana...

I'm still in the middle of getting educated about vipassana meditation (and whether I want to do it at all), and I'd like to put that whole issue aside and ask: if you aren't doing vipassana meditation, then what meditation instructions (if any) are you following or inspired by? Right now my meditat...

Re: Do the heaven/hell realms hurt credibility of the dhamma?

An aside about heaven and hell, which might give one a reason to believe in them: why not commit suicide? That would bring a quick end to suffering. There are very many quick, painless ways to do it, and it's easy to set it up so that there is as little as possible thinking about it before it happen...

Re: Do the heaven/hell realms hurt credibility of the dhamma?

I'm currently studying the dhammapada, and there is a passage mentioning "hell" in the part that I've already covered: idha tappati pecca tappati papakari ubhayattha tappati papam me katan ti tappati bhiyyo tappati duggatim gato DhP 17 The evil-doer has remorse now and remorse later (after...

Re: Daniel M. Ingram

Ingram is telling us a lot here. One thing he is telling us is that he disregards the Pali sutta tradition, which characterizes the arahant as one who is morally transformed. Moral transformation is something that part of the practice leading up to awakening as it is a result of the awakening. He i...

Re: Daniel M. Ingram

Greetings yuuki, I personally am a little hesitant to practice vipassana, because I can't find its source in the suttas? What about...? MN 10: Satipatthana Sutta http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.010.than.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Metta, Retro. :) Hey...

Re: Daniel M. Ingram

In his book, Mr. Ingram states that non-duality models of awakening are "without doubt [his] favorite of them all." As indicated by Mr. Ingram, there aren't specific moral changes in a non-dually awakened person's capabilities (i.e. not being able to lie) or experience (not feeling sensual...

Re: Uposatha Observance Club

Observing uposatha days is one of my resolutions for the New Year. I've been going by the actual phases of the moon as seen from Japan, where I live. It's nice having the day to reorient myself. And, I'm finding that it's actually a bonus that the days are completely at odds with the solar calendar,...
