Re: psychiatric drugs and the fifth precept
"I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness ." If the drugs prevent carelessness (seeing things, hearing voices, wild imaginations), then I don't see how they are against the 5th precept. Moderation is key. And if you are mentally ill,...

Re: psychiatric drugs and the fifth precept
Altar, you left out a fundamental part of the fifth precept. "I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness ." If the drugs prevent carelessness (seeing things, hearing voices, wild imaginations), then I don't see how they are against the ...

Re: Musings on Self-Defense
seanpdx and Manapa, yeah, I agree that intention is very important, even if the outcome is similar. And of course not making the choice to defend yourself or others out of anger... And lazy_eye, I will definitely think about 'actions' and consequence... Considering my own history, I have been violen...

Musings on Self-Defense
There is another thread on this (self-defense), but I couldn't draw any conclusions from it. I read this morning about a case of an Oklahoma woman defending herself from an intruder. You can hear the 911 call http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/12/09/earlyshow/main5949873.shtml . So with that situat...

If by cultivate, you mean I bought one at Walmart, can't remember the last time I gave it water (I should probably do that right now), and generally leave it alone, then yes I do cultivate bonsai.

Re: Buddhist Text for Non-Buddhist?
I have Old Path White Clouds and The Heart of Buddha's Teachings on the way in the mail. A light bulb just flicked on in my brain in that Thich Nhat Hanh is a Zen Monk, and I am interested in Theravada Buddhism, since the latter holds true to the original teachings (from what I've read). Also, Zen r...
