Re: Dhammapala (Dhamma protector-deity) in Theravada traditions
Westerners' conceptions of 'Theravada' are a lot simpler and narrower than what happens, and has always happened, on the ground in traditionally Theravadin countries. The interpenetration of Buddhist, Hindu and local religious elements makes it really hard - and perhaps really silly - to try to be d...

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab
The state of Israel has been a leading example in vaccinating the majority of its population. It offered the country a period of relative calm in terms of the number of COVID deaths and hospitalizations. Recently, cases are on the rise again. From what i am reading, the long term efficacy of vaccin...

Re: Can we accept secular Buddhism as Buddhism?
... I don't know why they didn't get Theravadins bhikkhus. That would have put at least a veneer of due process behind the matter. Perhaps the Theravadins thought it beyond the pale to assist a non-Theravadin sect, but I have a sinking feeling that the Ritsu Venerable in question didn't consider it...

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab
Not every doctor takes the vaccine. One has to ask why is this? Visit a plumber, you will find his taps leak. One has to ask why is this? Visit an electrician, you will find broken power points in his home. One has to ask why is this? Talk to a policeman - off duty - and he will admit to driving af...

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab
I've just had my first, too - yesterday, in fact. A-Z, because that's what was on offer and the extra risk (compared to Pfizer) is really very low. The nurse who did it reckoned that most people got some nausea-lethargy-headaches in the first day or two but that younger people (in their 30s and 40s)...

Re: Jesus is the Only Way?
Christians accept the afterlife hence right view And the Christian afterlife is eternalism, which is explicitly wrong view. more right than atheism which is often the only issue But atheism is annihilationism, which is also explicitly wrong view. Just as wrong as eternalism, in fact. 2 + 2 = 3 is w...

The Vatican? Yes, the Vatican that is heading an organization where child molestation has tradition is the authority to urge others to a culture of care and solidarity ... or so the OP thinks or the OP thinks what this Vatican says if worthy to be posted ... Sadly, sexual abuse app...

“There have been two great narcotics in European civilisation: Christianity and alcohol.” - Nietzsche Christians accept the afterlife hence right view There's a very big gap between the two halves of your post, cappuccino. And the Christian afterlife is eternalism, which is explicitly wrong view. T...

Re: Vesak
I'm going to the city communal Vesak, all the temples are coming together to have a big one, the Tibetans, Sri Lankans, Thai, Vietnamese, and some Cambodians, all in one big celebration. And the venue is in a Christian church hall! I like it! We sometimes use Christian meeting rooms here bu...

Re: Letting the breath breathe itself
Generally speaking, I tend to be someone who tries to keep things under control, mainly due to fear. Today I had an experience in the practice in which I realized that I also tend to control the breath. ... This sort of thing is quite common, I think. We are told to "observe the breath", ...

Re: Religious/Philosophy Education
Hi, Is Religion/ Philosophy taught in public schools in your country? If so, what is covered and how is it tested in standardised tests? I know schools in the UK study the Good News Bible. I'll be especially interested if you are from a Buddhist country. I come from a Muslim-majority country. Musli...

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab
Hi, asahi,
If I posted the stories of all the millions of people who have been vaccinated and had no adverse reactions it would be very boring and fill at least 5000 pages of this topic.
Imagine it done.
Now see how little your videos mean.

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab
The risk of the jab is so much smaller than the risk of the illness that you should have the vaccination, if possible, whether you are a Buddhist or not.
How much smaller? Perhaps a thousand times smaller.
