Sutta references to prayer in Buddhism

I've been running into a few people on the net who have claimed that prayer is a legitimate part of Buddhism.

Can anyone point me to sutta references where the Buddha endorses, or does NOT encourage prayer?

Re: Yoniso Manasikara

This is a BPS Wheel booklet about it. Pretty good, explains the concepts well and gives concrete exercises

Re: Why Westerners can't extend loving kindness to themselves?

"Westerners can't extend loving kindness to themselves" I heard above statement from many teachers more than once. I still can't understand the reason behind this. At the least, it is Westerners who bring up to teachers that they find it hard to project metta to themselves. My intuition i...

Why monks are so overweight if they fasting from noon to sunrise? This is something I always wondered. I'll admit that I am guessing, but based on what I have seen and read: 1. It is extremely unhealthy and promotes fat storage to clump all of your daily calories together. 2. Many monks probably ov...

Re: Culadasa on Positive Reinforcement

Ajahn Brahm has said similar things in his meditation sessions. He tells people to cultivate being relaxed and happy in the present moment to give the mind a reason to stay there.

Re: Observing the 5th Precept

How did you make the transition I just stopped. After joining Dhamma Wheel about five years ago. I felt it is inappropriate to teach Dhamma and consume alcohol. I still have a lot of peer group pressure to consume alcohol but I never gave to them.   So much r...

Re: Observing the 5th Precept

Go out with your friends. Get a look-alike-drink. Gingerale in a mug instead of beer. Club soda with lime in a glass with ice. Cranberry juice, etc. If anyone asks, say its for your health, doctor's orders. If they have a problems with that, they were never your friends to begin with, only drinking ...

Re: Gude to Translators for Beginners

I would go with Ajahn Sujato's translations.

They are contemporary (new) and they were done for non-academic English speakers, aka they were made to be easily understood.

They are also available free of charge.

Re: Free download of Itivuttaka by J.D. Ireland—EPUB, Kindle, PDF

I've used that translation in my sutta class. The prose is far less clunky, but the translation feels archaic. Why not use the just finished translation of Ajahn Sujato's designed to be easily understood by non-academic English speakers?

Re: Do you like or dislike devotional practices?

If a person is too rational it is difficult to become devotional . Being devotional is emotional . However , devotional is essential to soften the hardened mind. It does help a person to be spiritual instead of being philosophical all the time . I think highly of metta, but I've always seen it as a...

Re: Do you like or dislike devotional practices?

I don't do devotional practices.

Meditation, precepts, and reading up on the Buddha's teachings have a story behind them how they might work to move you forward in life and without requiring dogma. That isn't the case with devotional practices.

Re: Dhammawheel is not growing - because it has zero SEO

I tried these search strings on Google "buddhist forum" "buddhist web board" "buddhist webboard" dhammawheel.com did not come up on the first page for any of them. SEO doesn't have to cost money. I found this from Google for things a person can do their web site to impr...
