Re: Marriage or no marriage.

Also, I feel life is boring at the core but people tend to add layers on top of it by doing stuff and marriage is just another layer to mask it. I don't know about boring... That's just not the term I would use. More like 'turd soup' :quote: or something along those lines. Ha, I really don't hate i...

Re: Getting rid of a wasp nest without killing them... How?

I thought the dripping water idea in the OP sounded pretty good. If this was an issue for me, I would give it strong consideration. Effect nest evacuation and remove nest... Hope they set up shop further away next time.

Re: 5 Heinous Crimes

Even if you do wind up in a hell, it's only temporary. It's more of a setback than something that precludes liberation at a later time.

Having said that, don't go to hell!

Re: New to Buddhism...stuck in the Bible Belt

Oy! I survived the Bible Belt too... Mississippi born and raised. I find that a simple, unapologetic "Nah, I don't believe in that stuff," stops the eager-to-convert in their tracks. They may not like you for it, but that's their issue (probably stirs up insecurity in their own beliefs). I...

Re: No comment

The following parable from Ajahn Brahm's "Truckload of Dung" book sprung to mind: A simple forest monk was meditating alone in the jungle in a hut made of thatch. Late one evening, there was a very violent monsoon storm. The wind roared like jet aircraft and heavy rain thrashed against his...

Re: dhamma talk on 4NTs

I thought I would find a 4NT talk here: http://www.youtube.com/user/BuddhistSocietyWA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; However, my memory was faulty. There's not a talk with that in the title, at least. You can find the talk Rowyourboat referenced there. So even if this doesn...

Troves of talks from Ajahn Brahm and others are to be found here: http://www.youtube.com/user/BuddhistSocietyWA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; There are also quite a few on the BSWA website that aren't on this Youtube channel. Oh, and I really like what I've seen and heard ...

Neither of these are "how to get a girlfriend," but they may help contextualize things a bit for you.

Re: Dealing with people who want to hurt us...

Is creating distance between you and him an option? Writing problematic people off and going separate ways is a simple and effective solution in many situations, but it's not possible in all situations - particularly familial ones.

Better advice has already been given; that's just my 2 cents.

Re: The truth about European history

War screeched to an end when a nukuleer explosion was dropped on Heroshima. Apparently GWB authored one of those gems... One of my geology professors would put these sorts of quotes from submitted papers on the overhead projector and read them out loud whenever he returned our reports. Granted, the...

I went by 'Lasers go Pew Pew' on Esangha, but I am taking this as an opportunity to rename myself based on my strange affinity for Brian Bosworth, his Oakleys, his popped collar, :hello: Welcome to Dhamma Wheel! Strangely, I have an affinity toward that look too, mostly on women. http://ww...

Re: A suicide after a break-up

A guy I knew in high school blew his head off with a shotgun after a breakup. Quite the impulsive, myopic thing to do. His ex-girlfriend apparently felt "guilty" afterwards, which I suppose is a natural reaction. As Kurt Vonnegut would say, "So it goes." As far as "Buddhist ...

Re: Do you find Hinayana offensive?

Doesn't bother me....

It's just sort of an arrogant, condescending thing that reflects poorly on the wielder of the term.

Sort of like a Mormon telling me I'm going to hell or something.... Pfft, whatever.
