Re: Can monks attend to his sick parents or former wife?
Only mad tradition and commentaries written hundreds or a thousand years after the time of the Buddha, forbid tending to one's mother. Or even touching her. These same commentaries also say a monk should not touch his mum even if she is drowning in a river! He has to use a stick or a rope, or let h...

Re: Thai Theravadin monks and money
Touching money is not such an issue in my opinion, it is the becoming attached to it and the businessisation of monks that concerns me. For example you must actually pay monks to get ordained as a monk. The going rate for a compulsory donation to a upatcha is about 3,000B. Each monks attending the c...

Re: Buddha statues are not idols?..
Buddha statues are sometimes idols, sometimes just statues. Children in Buddhist countries will see their parents bow and pay great respect to statues and grow up to believe that The Buddha and statues of him have some sort of inherent magical sacredness. That's idolatry, and it's not commonly over...

Re: Dating the Buddha
Bechert edited a large 3 volume work which was a collection of papers on the dating of the historical Buddha. There are papers looking at the date from many different traditions and angles. One was by Gombrich in which he went through the Pali commentaries and worked out based on rough ages and life...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test
The "world's largest Emerald Buddha image replica" at Si Sa Ket's Wat Pa Khanthitham was found yesterday it was not made of jade. Disrobed monk Wirapol Sukpol, better known as Luang Pu Nenkham, claimed the green concrete figurine was made of Indian jade. The Department of Special Investig...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test
@Bankei - Aj Yantra as he was known is still around - in fact saw him on a video clip just the other day sporting a long beard and wearing dull orange/brown robes. Somewhere in Florida I believe? I remember the fuss in the newspapers back in 1994/1995 when the stories of his sexual exploits came to...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test
Things like these are not that rare in other Buddhist traditions, and in other spiritual / religious schools, right? I guess part of the shock around the jet-setting monks etc. is that so far, Theravada has had the reputation of being relatively free of scandals, the most un-problematic tradition o...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test
The Thai media is full of monk scandals at the moment, but what really cuts me is the murder of ecology monks (phra nak anuraksa) by the Thai military who resent their obstruction of illegal logging. These reports almost never appear in the Thai media due to censorship. I'm told that the preferred ...

In an article today they mentioned DNA tests had been done using the DNA of Mr Nenkham's parents and the results should be out tomorrow - 10th. And what is the story behing this monk with his foot on the table - photo was linked above http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/357035/monks-shopping-in-us...
