Re: Understanding Engineers

The graduate with a science degree asks, 'Why does it work?' The graduate with an engineering degree asks, 'How does it work?' The graduate with an accounting degree asks, 'How much will it cost?' The graduate with an arts degree asks, 'Do you want fries with that?' INDEED! From a jobless, penniles...

Re: Mindfulness and exercise/sports

Well done Kate! I'm still swimming laps in the pool but not as often as I like. I find if I don't have to share a lane with anyone (which is rare), my mindfulness increases as I just use the black line at the bottom of the pool to anchor my mind and my stroke. kind regards Ben Lately I've been tryi...

Music

This may be a bit unorthodox, but I'd like to share with you my experience of music and ask you for your own experiences and feelings about it. My preferred type of music is classical. I find that it expresses something...emotions, life...in a beautiful, beautiful way. Take Chopin's piano music... p...

Re: Mindfulness and exercise/sports

I do a fair amount of running and find that my mind wanders far less when running than when doing other activities. I get into a rhythm and often end up in a slight trance-like state. I dunno whether that's particularly useful for anything, but I always feel great after running, decreases my levels ...

Re: Mindfulness and exercise/sports

Hi Ed Please don't laugh at what i am about to tell you...Its so 'buddhist geek'... For a while there I used to play my teacher chanting suttas via my earpieces while on the treadmill/stationery bike/rowing machine. That didn't last long but i maintained awareness of sensation without reacting duri...

Are there any examples of humour in any of the scriptures? (and no, that's not a joke!)

What part, if any, does humour play in your understanding of life, and in your practice?

For me I guess it amounts to not taking things so seriously... laughing at myself...

illusion

I read and hear a lot of Buddhists talk about the world as "an illusion." What exactly does this mean? Am I right in thinking that it would be more accurate to say that our view of the world is an illusion (that is, unless you're a Buddha) ? I fail to see how the world is an illusion. OK -...

Re: Do you have to abstain from sex to achieve jhana?

what is sex? does it somehow fall outside of nama and rupa? if not how then is it different from plowing a field or getting all worked up over a political debate? or take for instance a sports match, there is the physical side of it while there is the lust and craving to win. can athletes not achie...

Re: the Dhamma without rebirth: amoral and what else?

Nowheat, Another (and to my mind deeper) argument is that without rebirth, there's no urgent reason to seek total liberation from samsara. If it's just a matter of getting through one's present life, we could just as well learn to manage samsara better, or achieve a higher-quality samsara. What is ...
