Re: Dividing Attention vs One Pointed Concentration
Reflection wrote: It is my conviction (but not just mine) that 'experiencing the whole body' means experiencing the whole breath-body. You naturally focus on the entire breath from the start till the end, so even those one or two remaining thoughts will not appear. To me this is both a logical and ...

Re: Buddham Dhammam Sangham Namo Swami
Thank you all for your kind responses. I listened carefully to the audio again and "Buddham Dhammam Sangham Namassami" is what it sounds like. I take it that the english translation would be "To the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha I bow (or prostrate)". :thanks: again for clearing thi...

Buddham Dhammam Sangham Namo Swami
I have noticed that Ajahn Brahm and Ajahn Munindo recite/chant the following lines before commencing with some of their talks: Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma-sambuddhasa (3 times) Buddham Dhammam Sangham Namo Swami (once) I am quite familiar with the first part ("Namo Tassa ..."), but ...

Re: Pizza and meditation
It would be interesting to know how the people (monks and laity) in the Buddha's time and several hundred years after that (that is before the suttas were written down) engaged in "Dhamma Study". Perhaps monks recited some suttas followed by discussion/debates of sorts? Is there any online...

My skeptical doubts concerning the Sangha as it relates to refuge in the Triple Gem have been adequately addressed.

..... If you think of the sangha as the ideal of the sangha, you can still take refuge in it even while acknowledging that you have no regular contact with ordained sangha ..... ...... ..... .... :anjali: Thank you, Kim, for reading my post and for your kind response. Re: The Triple Gem - It's Three Components
Hi Mike & Chris Thank you both for your responses. It seems to me that the " Savaka Sangha (or Ariya Sangha) " who is defined as " those attained to any of the Eight Stages of Enlightenment (the 4 usual stages divided into Path and Fruit) who are "worthy of gifts, hospitality...

.... .... .... I'd be curious how you guys would deal (or have dealt) with something like a termite infestation... I guess a householder should call an exterminator, right? So as to take care of his assets/family and all, but what about a Buddhist monastery? Do they just let the monastery crumble t...

The Triple Gem - It's Three Components
Greetings to Venerables & Friends :anjali: Today, after reading the following simile regarding the Triple Gem, I spent some time reflecting on this: The Buddha's appearance in the world is like the sun rising over the horizon. His teaching of the true Dhamma is like the net of the sun's rays spr...

The top knot could perhaps have been influenced by Hindu or pre-Hindu traditions. See pic below of Hindu God, Shiva:

Re: the great rebirth debate
:namaste: More than two thousand years have gone by and there is still no consensus about (post-mortem) rebirth. Will there be consensus about this in our relatively short lifespan? I don't think so! Then, are we wasting our time here? Maybe not; because "the great rebirth debate" may actu...

The One Who Knows
My enquiry is with regard to the "Water Buffalo" simile (quoted below), from the book "A Tree in the Forest, A Collection of Ajahn Chah's Similes": Our thinking follows sense objects and pursues them wherever they go. yet not any one of the sense objects is substantial. They are ...

Re: Practising and non-practising Buddhists?
I would like to think that all those who take refuge in the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha and undertake to keep the Five Training Rules (Precepts) are "practicing Buddhists", even if, for example, they do not practice formal meditation at all. They simply practice at different levels.
