I was fortunate enough to see in person the Dalai Lama speak, last year, and this was a highlight for me.
Happy Birthday to the Dalai Lama. I find him a wonderful role model, with all he does to promote peace in our world.

Re: The Practice of Mindfulness
I think you are posing a problem which doesnt really exist Chicka-Dee. The way to verify the truth of the Buddhas teaching is certainly by practice, but what is verified isnt some intellectual speculation. What is verified is what the Buddha taught in the Canon. We dont in the Theravada just hang e...

Re: The Practice of Mindfulness
The notion of Aatta or Atman may well have led to all sorts of social injustice Chicka-Dee. However the Buddhas teaching of Anatta was not merely a political statement. He meant it, no abiding permenant self. That is the teaching, or so I believe of the Theravada. Oh, yes! Sanghamitta, I agree that...

Re: The Practice of Mindfulness
But you speak of the observer as self, self as "myself" and thoughts as "my" thoughts. Buddha challenged this idea, spoke of no self residing within us, observing these processes... Yes, this is a good question. I don't think we should start trying to think of ourselves as 'no-s...

Re: The Practice of Mindfulness
Hi Chris and all, Although I don't know a lot about the technical explanations of mindfulness vs vipassana, etc, I do practice both, and can only really comment based on my own experience, using my own 'terminology'.. so appologies for this, in advance. Reading thru this thread, the following commen...

Re: Experiential Wisdom: Bhavana-maya panna
Hi Chris, I took a class this spring based on Phillip Moffitt's book: "Dancing With Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering". The book examines the 4 Noble Truths within the context of the 12 insights of the Buddha.. basically each of the Noble Truths i...

Re: Inspirational quotes and poetry
THE KINGDOM OF LOVE In the dawn of the day the sea and the earth Reflected the sunrise above, I set forth with a heart full of courage and mirth To seek for the Kingdom of Love. I asked a Poet I met on the way Which cross-road would lead me aright; And he said: 'Follow me, and ere long you shall see...

I completely agree. And we each must be responsible for telling the difference.Chris wrote:Without both study and practice, there is grave danger of going astray - or missing opporutnities in this rare human birth.

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
Hi Dhammakid, I find it interesting that there is such an interest in this point. I was hoping there would've been more interest in this comment: Did God create us in his own image? Or did we create God in our own image? Or , is there any difference? I think that I agree with you that there isn't a ...

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
Pointless? Yeah. The above quote reads as a roundabout criticism of those who supposedly have only that naughty book learning stuff we see here in this thread. They clearly are not genuine, whatever that might mean. Tilt, I appologize if it came through that way. :? It just seems some of us speak m...

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
And I should mention that it was a reaally good friend of mine who first taught me this.. he said something like, 'you can't find it by just reading books! you gotta learn through your own experience'. This is a common statement that you'll find from many Dhamma teachers from the Buddha on down (pe...

Re: Story of Stuff
Hi sundara, hi genkaku.. both of these are great! I actually posted the story of stuff on another (non-buddhist) forum, sundara, because it made an impact on me. Very important for us to be aware of! And I love the way Carlin pokes fun at ourselves.. makes one consider how ridiculous it reall...

Re: The universe is without a refuge, without a Supreme God.
Very interesting material, chris::: and Jechbi. Did God create us in his own image? Or did we create God in our own image? Or , is there any difference? Something to ponder. Have fun with your son at the museum, chris:::!! and enjoy the rest of your vacation (forget all about everything else and ju...
