Re: Talks by Brahm about Divorce

Many thanks for your responses! I'd be really wary of meddling in this space. Honestly, if someone has come to this decision, that's a pretty significant step in and of itself, and I'm sure they have their reasons why they're following this path... I am not trying to meddle in it. The girl came to m...

Talks by Brahm about Divorce

Hi All, Two of my colleagues, married to each other, are considering separation and divorce. Both of them are good friends of mine. Needless to say, I am really torn! It is the guy who has initiated this. I have had long one-on-one chats with both of them; and of course, I have suggested them to see...

Re: Using left hand to eat

So eating with your left is looked down upon, for obvious sanitary reasons. But how do people in these parts of the world prepare their food? Serious question, by the way. Regardless of being left or right, eating with hands is looked down upon in the West anyways! So how do people in the West prep...

Re: Using left hand to eat

This stems from pre-TP times and the fact that in some of these cultures many people still do not have access to TP (toilet paper). There is a bucket of water to the left of the hole in the room where one relieves themselves of solid waste and the left hand is used to clean up afterward. Haha getti...

Adults Living with their Parents

Do you live with your in-laws? How have you managed this? I am in a situation where it would be better to live with the in-laws so we can take care of them, who knows how much time they have left on this planet. It is not a situation where we depend on parents but we as working adults look after one...

Re: Economic security & other issues re: disrobing

I too have thought about this issue many times before! In this so called modern unpredictable life, especially if you are going to ordain in a foreign unfamiliar land, I'd advise one to put one's money into a trust account with legal clauses that specify money can not be withdrawn for say 2 or 3 yea...

Re: Theravada Meditation in Auckland, NZ

Thanks Ben! I know you are a pro at Goenka retreats and I have done a few myself, would have been to cool to catch up :)

I agree, might be harder to sustain regular group sits even if I do get a group together...anyway let's see how things turnout.

Theravada Meditation in Auckland, NZ

Greetings All, My first post after 3.5 years!!!! Where has the time gone! Are there any folk interested in starting a meditation group/club (ideally with a Theravadan-bent) here in Auckland? It would be great to connect with other spiritually-minded people to meet regularly and share experiences, me...

Re: We don't want to renounce. We want to have fun.

It is said that Buddha's father - King Suddhodhana, achieved Arahatship whilst still a lay man, albeit on his deathbed, when he was preached by none other than the Buddha himself. Buddhism definitely seems to sap the fun out of life. My experience has been the same. Though I find much comfort in Bud...

Re: Buddha's Viewon Negroes

At that time the bhikkhus conferred the pabbajjà ordination on a person whose hands were cut off, on a person whose feet were cut off, whose hands and feet were cut off, whose ears were cut off, whose nose was cut off, whose ears and nose were cut off, whose fingers were cut off, whose [\q 225/] th...

Re: Buddha's Viewon Negroes

Actually according to the Vinaya it is considered wrong for a monk to give anyone with a social stigma Pabbaja. Buddhaghosa in the Samantapásádiká provides a long list of stigmas, one of which is having too dark of skin -- but then another is having too light of skin. Pulga, I don't mean any disres...

Re: Buddha's Viewon Negroes

Hi Guys, Even though the use of terms such as negro, n****r etc are considered very offensive and derogatory in the Western world, it is NOT so in all cultures. The exact translation of negro etc is used to refer to people of african descent and/or people with very dark skin colour and just that; no...

I think like this when I am compelled to engage with d!ck-heads..and so far it has worked really well for me.  so my idea of his actions is what causes me irritation? No, that's not necessarily what I meant. His actions may well be very arrogant and cold but your reaction would be m...
