Re: Hitting a Monk?
I recall a Sinhalese bhikkhu touching my shoulder after a friend introduced us. I do think intention is to be considered, and it was clearly a friendly gesture. Still, as a lay person I wouldn't risk initiating any sort of physical contact.

That's probably the best idea. =p
I also heard that in case it is breached, you can always retake the sila and makeup the lost time. I mean, any way I'm fine with the situation. Just wanted to clear up the details.

Re: Uposatha -- How do you observe precepts 7 and 8?
I gotta say, the 6th is the most difficult for me. The funny thing is I don't normally eat a lot, but my usual meals take place in the evening rather than one or two in the morning. I have a specific question too regarding the 7th...I'm a bit confused about the concept of not breaking sila if so and...

I'm glad they see it too. Soon they'll have a Thai Reformation...which will only cause more problems. =p But I sure hope they get their act together. May they all be well. _/|\_Peter wrote:From the article:

Re: Altar supplies
I'm still uncertain as to whether or not the university will grant the group a permanent space, though it is possible. If not, then absolutely one or two portable items would be best. As I'm aiming for a longer-lasting space (or an office for executive members at least), I was just curious about bas...

Re: Altar supplies
I apologize for being unclear...I'm from the USA, State College, PA. And no hard feelings about the shrine. I'm not trying to say that I absolutely need such and such, and certainly not for personal use. Part of my reason for asking is to understand the anatomy of such structures and their relations...

Re: Do you have a true story for Zen Moments?
Zen Moments, I've had a number of small experiences that have helped shape the way I view life and my practice. These are mostly from talks and readings that were emotionally or spiritually moving for me. I cannot say I remember all of them...that's impermanence for you. There is one time i...

Altar supplies
Hi all, So I've been looking through some images of Theravada shrines (home and monastery) and think I'm gaining a pretty good idea as to what the traditional shrine is composed of. Candles, stacked tables, stupa figurines, Buddha rupas, etc. Now my problem is I have absolutely no idea where to get ...

Re: Buddharupa
I agree that a lot of rupas don't really..."click" with me either. Tis why I often find myself more attracted to devotional paintings.
That is certainly a great idea, Bhante. Thank you! I'll be sure to look into some posters!

Re: Considering going into teaching, thoughts?
I think it's a wonderful idea! I'm also planning on getting certified in Art History and Japanese (maybe more) to teach High School through College. I've had the opportunity to teach 6th graders an art class about diversity and I think it went extremely well. One child went so far as to say he thoug...

Buddharupa
Hi all, So I'm thinking about starting a Buddhist organization at my school and have been looking for a Buddharupa to go along with the practice. I've had enough trouble looking for one for a personal altar, mostly because of cost. So for the group I'm interested in finding something much like the m...

Re: Women can be Buddha
I am curious as to why some members believe women cannot become Sammasambuddhas. Is it because they're UNABLE? Or because it's just not (yet?) said to happen? I'm not really favoring either way. I just want to know where the support for the negative view comes from. And what of Paccekabuddhas?...

Cardinal directions
Hi all, I's been awhile and I'm back with yet another question that has come up. I was recently talking to my Hindu friend's father again, and something came up about the cardinal directions. According to his tradition, bowing to the ten directions (N, S, E, W, NW, NE, SW, SE, up, down) is symbolic ...
