Re: "th" in Pali
Perhaps "pronounced" was the wrong term to use. I suppose I had English in mind, in that the "th" sound we have in words like "thimble" or "thin" is absent in how words like Tathagata are rendered..."tah-TAH-gah-tah" instead of "tah-THAA [as in ...

One Channa or multiple?
Today I ran across the story of the Venerable Channa's suicide in the Majjhima Nikaya (MN 144.12). I recall from the Mahaparinibbana Sutta that just before the Buddha's Parinibbana he declared an act of censure would be carried out by the Sangha against Channa (DN 16.6.4) Were there more than one Ch...

"th" in Pali
I have noticed that in Pali words containing the combination "th", the "h" is usually not pronounced -- as in Savatthi, Tathagata, et cetera. However, in listening to mp3 recordings of various suttas, I have invariably heard the reader pronounce the name Anathapindika with the &q...

V or W?
In listening to Dhamma talks and chanting on the websites of various Theravadin monasteries, I have noticed that some group pronounce v's as w's in Pali (i.e., Bhaga v ato, brahma v ihara). (I'm reminded of the Vesak vs. Wesak semantics, but I know that Vesak is Sinhalese). Could anyone help shed so...

A question (Parent permission and ordination)
The ordination ceremony for bhikkhus and bhikkunis stipulates that the candidate must have their parents' permission. Is the permission of both parents necessary, or does one suffice? What if one parent gives permission, while the other withholds it? Just seeking some clarification. With metta, Just...

Re: The consequence for using intoxicants
I walked into sociology two weeks ago to find that a classmate of mine had his right arm in a cast. When he was asked what happened to him, he replied that he had gotten drunk at a party over the weekend, fallen into a deluded fury, and punched a thick wooden staircase banister, breaking his wrist. ...

An Uposatha Question
I understand that one of the addition precepts on an Uposatha is refraining from high and luxurious beds and couches. Does this rule take effect after waking on the morning of an Uposatha, with the abstinence taking place through that night's sleep until the following morning, or does one need to ab...

Re: Past lives
Hi Justin, I'm hoping someone can help me out, given that I still have much to learn. Does anyone know where in the Tipitaka the Buddha addresses the question of why humans can't remember their past lives, He doesn't, but the Pali commentators blame it on the prolonged dullness of mind during gesta...

Past lives
I'm hoping someone can help me out, given that I still have much to learn. Does anyone know where in the Tipitaka the Buddha addresses the question of why humans can't remember their past lives, or absent of a specific scriptural reference, what the Buddha's explanation was? With metta, Justin :nama...

Re: Respect for parents
Here's a sutta passage that echoes issue that you are facing, and the Buddha's advice: "Monks, if anyone should speak in disparagement of me, of the Dhamma, or of the Sangha, you should not be angry, resentful or upset on that account. If you were to be angry or displeased at such disparagement...
