Re: Chess Match 1 - Dan74 v Guy

Hey Dan, I wasn't gloating!! It's just that u didn't seem to be so generous when we played, a few years ago. :) But yeah, it's high time for a rematch...

Re: Chess

I'm in! Used to play quite a bit when I was at school. But haven't really played in ages. So I'm probably horrible at it now. But a tournament sounds like fun. :-)

Read it a few years ago and loved it. It was an easy read, and was very informative.

Re: Is It Possible to Be a Lay Theravada Buddhist?

Even today I see mostly Europeans attending lectures and meditation while the Asians mostly make donations and offerings and then leave. I think we need to keep in mind that the path is not only about meditation. Dana is an integral part of the teachings and should be practiced as such. It ...

Re: Dhamma Wheel Lounge vs. Scenes from Casablanca?

I haven't been part of e-sangha, so I have no idea what the drama is about. But I have found this forum to be very helpful. Most of all, because it gives me a feeling of not being alone on the path (ever since I moved to a new suburb a year or so ago, I haven't had as much contact with my dhamma fri...

Here's another translation, from Ven. K Sri Dhammananda: Not falling into error, virtuous and endowed with insight, he discards attachment to sensuous desires. Truly, he does not come again; to be conceived in the womb. Here's the Pali (not in the correct font): Ditthinca anupa gamma silava Dassa-n...

Re: Bhikkhuni ordination...

In Sri Lanka, even the 10 precept nuns wear the brown robes, and are supported by the community. My first retreat was at a monastery run by 10 precept nuns about 6 years ago, and it was like any other monastery. There were facilities for both men and women to meditate, and instructions were given by...

Re: kwan yin in thereavada pratice

My aunt is a farmer who raises cows, among other animals. When I see them, they always seemed to be dumb animals. They don't make facial expressions, always have those dumb cow eyes, and their random bleating "mooo!" couldn't possibly be interpreted as reflecting one emotion over another....

Re: Dhamma Books in Melbourne

Hi Salmon, If u can get a few copies of 'Mindfulness in Plain English' by bhante Henepola Gunaratana, it would be very useful I think (specially for Dan to distribute in prisons). I know there's a free version of this book, because my friend had one a few years ago, but I haven't come across it in a...

Niyama Dhamma

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a sutta which discusses the five niyama dhammas. I looked in accesstoinsight but couldn't find anything.

Thank you...

Re: Ariyan aspirations and the lay follower

One of the first Theravada texts I have read was one from Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw ( Satipatthana Vipassana ) from which I got the impression that the goal of realizing Nibbana was not supposed to be some long-distance objective, in fact I understood that the objective of becoming an Aryian shouldn...
