Re: signless concentration vs emptiness

Hi ChandrFabian, Dear Mike, I don't see in that article saying nimitta also including tactile sensations. Do you mean the "meditave sign" nimitta, or the "outward appearance" meaning? I've certainly heard people talk of "tactile nimittas", but I'm not sure if whether o...

Re: About nibbana

Says who? The only way that could be vefied is by an arahant who died and then came back to tell us about it. Says me, we don't need Arahant coming back from Nibbana to tell us, we can use our common sense to learn which mental factor has stopped, compared to similar experience by Phala Samapatti a...

Re: About nibbana

Dear Tilt, Nirodha Samapatti is an experience of Nibbana most closely resemblance to Anupadisesa Nibbana (Nibbana without remainder). Says who? The only way that could be vefied is by an arahant who died and then came back to tell us about it. Says me, we don't need Arahant coming back from Nibbana...

Re: signless concentration vs emptiness

Hi ChandraFabian I just know nimitta as perception of light in mind. Is feeling that arises is nimitta? Nimitta is used all over the Suttas, often translated as "sign". The samadhi nimittas ("sign of concentration") are seem to be only mentioned explicitly in teh commentaries. A...

Re: About nibbana

This sounds like it was based on a wrong view of anatta. If there was nothing that we should view as a "self," then there would be no "self" for us to end when we do the nirodha samapatti... right? So, why would this (necessarily) give someone a more direct realization about ana...

There's no jhana for one with no discernment, no discernment for one with no jhana. But one with both jhana & discernment: he's on the verge of Unbinding. (ie- not yet there, almost there) http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/dhp/dhp.25.than.html#dhp-372" onclick="window.open(th...

Re: How common is stream entry?

From Kevin, Two points Zom. First of all, from you quote above you seem to think that stream-entry may be very common. Yet, if one tells other that they are a stream winner, they will be attacked. You have verbally attacked all stream-winners that announce themselves in another thread. This seems to...

Re: How common is stream entry?

Dear friends, in my opinion people who achieved Sotapanna may be much more than we thought, I used to have impression Magga-Phala achievement is nearly impossible in this modern day, especially with a lot of amusement around. But after longer intensive Vipassana retreat, I know my conviction was wro...

Re: Not-self or No-self?

Dear friends, Let us translate the meaning of AN in an-atta, what is the best translation? no-atta or not-atta ? Actually The Buddha said in one of the Sutta, Dhamma is deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness. Emptiness is direct experience of anatta. So anatta experience...

Re: self

Hi, all - I hope my thought below does not sound too sarcastic to you. A weight-loss ad reads : 'How to stop eating, once and for all?" It doesn't make sense to educate an overweight person : 'Who eats? There is no one eating.' How would such empty "no-self" philosophy help a fat per...

Re: Not-self or No-self?

Dear friends, Let's consider this, we know five aggregates are merely process nothing more. Now the question is whether we can say five aggregates as self or not, in conventional way...? The fact remain, our five aggregates exist, in conventional reality we can say self exist, because five aggregate...

Re: Not-self or No-self?

Dear Shonin, Somo and Beeblebrox, I think we can not translate only by not-self, no-self or no-soul. As Somo has pointed out, it depends wether we want to discuss anatta in a conventional (lokiya) sense or we want to discus anatta in ultimate reality sense (Lokuttara) So no-self, not-self or no-soul...

Re: signless concentration vs emptiness

Respectfully, I feel like you are missing the point that I am trying to make. That is, that the term "nimitta" has a wider and more general meaning than simply being a phenomenon, a perception of light or whatnot, linked with jhana practice. Whenever we perceive an object, there are nimit...
