"Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

An example of discursive thinking leading to penetration is here..................... "Monks, there is a four-phrased statement that, when it is recited, a wise man will in no long time learn the meaning through discernment. I will recite it, and you learn it from me.".......................

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

Getting back to Alex's initial post about "rise & fall" and whether discursive thinking is used. The way I understand things is that jhana as taught in the suttas is actually developed through insight/understanding of one or more aspects of the Buddha's Dhamma. From within jhana the ri...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

Hi Tilt, No I haven't read it in full. The commentaries & some teachers today, portray jhana as suppression - this is not correct - it is abandoning (I admit it is not eradication - merely a means to approaching eradication). The Buddha never talked about jhana as a means to suppress. The auster...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

Hi Beeblebrox, It does seem we do agree on quite a few things. Your initial confusion could have been cleared up by asking me how I used certain words like "abandoning". I dont know why you thought I was being obtuse by clarifying what right concentration is or talking about "noting&q...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

And what commentaries say this? And exactly how do the jhanas "abandon" the hindrances permanantely, which is what you seem to be say that they do? Not at all. Saratthappakasini, Samyutta Nikaya-atthakatha. This is a complete misrepresentation -please read my post again. I never said that...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

While I understand the distinction being made, if you take what legolas wrote in context and understand it not from the perspective that you presented it in (through isolating one idea stated in one sentence), but from within the context of what was written, the term "right concentration"...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

I take it that you are in agreement with me that there is no sutta where thought subsides other than when 2nd jhana and above is attained. I'm not sure what you mean by "subside". Perhaps you're talking about ceasing completely. That doesn't seem relevant to the current discussion. There ...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

As a question, can you point to any sutta where the Buddha states that thoughts subside other than the 2nd jhana and above? If it takes the second jhana for thoughts to subside, then the 2nd jhana certainly is not at all unknown to experienced vipassana practitioners in long term retreats who exper...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

I agree with Tilt. I'm a relative amateur compared to some people here, but my experience is that after several days on silent retreat building up mindfulness and concentration it's really not that difficult to get some idea of what the Buddha was talking about. If you attend closely then there wil...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

Possibly one of the most straightforward approaches to jhana is this....... "Anuruddha, when you think these eight thoughts of a great person, then — whenever you want — quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, you will enter & remain in the first jhana: rapture...

Re: "Rise and Fall" How to practice it?

Hello all, In the suttas it often talks about many benefits of contemplating rise and fall. But the instructions He gives seem to imply that one thinks about it. "There is the case where a monk [discerns]: 'Such is form, such its origination, such its disappearance. Such is feeling... Such is ...

Re: HHDL Cook Off!

. Maybe times are changing and a high-profile Theravadin leader will emerge. I rather hope not. I hope not too. I don't know if the Buddha expressly prohibited proselytisation, but from early times it has been discouraged. I think there are many reasons for this, not least among them is the fact th...

Re: HHDL Cook Off!

This is one of the sillier thread I have seen in some time. The Dalai Lama is on a cooking show? He is not my teacher, he does not belong to the school I belong to, he does not seem to be doing anything inappropriate, so I don't give a rat's ass. There are other thing that one can get one's nose ou...
