Re: Domestication of animals

Whether domestication is inherently "right" or "wrong" aside, cats are obligate carnivores and dogs really need meat and organs in their diet for optimal health (IMO, not looking to get in to a "feeding dogs a vegan diet" debate)...so if a person lives by veg*n principl...

Re: Fasting and frugality in food

I do intermittent fasting most of the week - about 16 hours a day (I basically just eat two meals between noon and 8pm). Not for religious reasons, that just seems to be the eating window that works best for me. I occasionally do a 24 hour fast, but not often. After exhausting the glycogen stored in...

Re: How to lose weight

You're on the right track! Veggies=good. *very low carb is the best* This has totally worked for me. Plus sprinting and heavy lifting. *nodding vigorously* Body composition is primarily what you eat and secondarily how (often/much) you move your body. And bringing up the rear, but very important to...

Re: Justify eating meat

And like it or not the very fact that way are intelligent enough to be posting on the internet (or even have invented the internet) is because our evolutionary ancestors included meat in their diets. The inclusion of more protein in our ancestors diets is widely held to be the reason that our brain...

Re: Justify eating meat

Why eat meat? Well, yes it tastes good. Also, it's what we evolved to eat for hundreds of thousands of years. It's nearly the perfect source of fuel for our bodies, when combined with veggies and fruit. Civilizations of disease are more closely associated with things like wheat and other grains whic...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

I am not a vegetarian. I eat a primal/paleo diet, as I feel that is the most appropriate diet for optimal health. It has certainly remedied a lot of issues in my life. I am mindful of the type of meat we eat (as well as veggies). We try to eat local and our meat/dairy/eggs are from free-range, grass...

Re: Confusion about Karma and Reincarnation

Let's not think too lowly of animals. I think there is a lot to this. There is a lot about dogs (and cats and other animals) that we don't understand. I believe animals are capable of more emotion and critical thinking that we give them credit for. I've always been an avid animal watcher...living w...

Re: Hello - new here and to Buddhism

Welcome Love! Offtopic, but is greyhound racing gaining or losing or staying the same in popularity? Also are whippets used for racing? Greyhound racing has taken a steady dive in popularity for many years now and I don't see it changing. There is a lot of competition for the gambling dollar and mo...

ooooooooooook, then. I need to change my vote. Idle chatter. It's going to be tough to even just be aware of it, much less cut back. Thanks bodom, I definitely have a bit to read and think about with regards to right speech.

Re: Which Precept is most difficult for you?

pardon this really basic question: what is considered idle chatter? Is that talking about the weather or what you had for lunch? (ie, stuff that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things)
