Re: Insight Meditation and the Thai Forest Tradition
This book was incredibly helpful regarding Ajahn Chah's method of Vipassana: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0835605973/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0835605973&linkCode=as2&redirect=true&tag=at382-20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return fal...

Meaning of contemplation in Vipassana-Thinking
I just finished Bhante Gunaratana's book The Four Foundations of Mindfulness In Plain English. I have also read all his other works as well as many books on the teachings of Ajahn Chah. My question is two-fold. 1.) Both speak of contemplating something that arises while doing Insight Meditation. In ...

Re: Meal prayer
Thank you Mike for explaining what "feelings" the reflection refers to. I wasn't quite sure about that.

Re: Meal prayer
From The Four Foundations of Mindfulness In Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana; " with mindful reflection, I eat this food, neither for amusement, nor for intoxication, nor for the sake I physical beauty and attractiveness, but only for the endurance and continuance of this body, for ending dis...

Bhavana Vandana by Bhante Gunaratana-order
Does anyone know if this is the order of the chanting used at the Bhavana Society? Just curious because the section for offerings is done about halfway through and te closing recollection preceded the section on asking for forgiveness and sharing wishes. I would just think a "closing" woul...

Mahasi technique and overcoming defilements
My main meditation practice is Vipassana as taught by Bhante Gunaratana, although I do use somewhat of the Mahasi Sayadaw technique of using some basic metal notes during "normal" life to try and maintain as much mindfulness as possible. My question regarding the Sayadaw technique of notin...

Re: Mixing traditions- No Theravada temple near
Update- I visited the Korean Zen group last week and it was pretty interesting. The Sunim (monk) there was very nice and t seemed to be a pretty tight knit group. It was the center's one year anniversary so there was a very short meditation and a Dharma talk including a story from the Tipitika. From...

Re: Mixing traditions- No Theravada temple near
Oh I by no means intend on abandoning my Theravada background. Like I said in my first post, I've implemented these teachings and meditation practices into my life and I havn't been the same since. Basically, I'm 28, I've worked in tattoo shops my whole life and we'll just say that most of my curren...

Re: Mixing traditions- No Theravada temple near
Thank you everyone for your advice. I do realize that different traditions are really just different paths with the same destination. I'll check out te temple and see what I think. I do suppose I'm mainly looking for a nice place to go to keep me motivated and meet some similar minds.

Mixing traditions- No Theravada temple near
I've been practicing Buddhism in the Theravada tradition as taught by Ven. Ajahn Chah and his disciple monks for the past few years now. My meditation practice has mainly come from those teachings and Bhante Gunaratana. Here is my predicament. The nearest Theravada temple is about three hours from m...
