Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainment

I understand the pop idea that "if you set standarts too high, then you will be discouraged and don't try" . But it also has serious drawbacks. If you set standarts too low, then you won't need to work as hard and as long, and the "attainments" will not be the real thing. So one...

Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainment

Like Nathan said earlier, this is not a new movement, that there is a continuity of thought concerned with modernizing, rationalizing and humanizing the traditional teachings that can be seen in the writings of many monks and laymen throughout the last century and more, Individuals such as Ledi Say...

Re: Latest from "hardcore dharma"

1. Arahats cannot lie. Yes, they can if they "want". However, that "wanting" to lie doesn't arise much at all. The truth in any situation is what pulls one to act. Lying is not attractive but it doesn't mean it isn't possible. One can lie, but it really depends on the very disce...

Re: Devadatta

Well, it goes go without saying that one person's enlightenment is another person's delusion :jumping: Wikipedia has a good description of the paradigm: Scholar monks undertake the path of studying and preserving the Pali literature of the Theravada. They may devote little time to the practice of me...

Okay, maybe it's time for some light humor in this thread... is it just me or does Ngakpa Chogyam look like a Nutcracker King?

Re: Devadatta

The author seems to have a rather different understanding of awakening than the Theravada: Devadatta is also a realized master and, through his awakening, is in possession of magical power. Mike Don't know how you came to such a conclusion, as Ray wasn't claiming that Devadatta was a realized maste...

Devadatta

A series of tragic events occurred when the Buddha was 72 years old and in the 37th year of his teaching mission. This was the year when his cousin Devadatta initiated a schism in the ranks of the Sangha, then instigated a palace coup in the city of Rajagriha, the capital of the kingdom of Magadha, ...

Re: Bhikkuni Prophecy?

Do you know what is to change the constituition of a country? Do you know what is to found a knew country? It needs a new constituition or a modified one. The same is the Vinaya of the Sangha founded by the Tathagata. Rules are Rules, they have a principle, they exist to conduct to peace, they are ...

The Dhamma is to be practiced

The following is a translation of an article by Satya Narayan Goenka, originally published in the April 1998 issue of the Vipaśhyanā Patrikā. What is the pure nature of Dhamma? What is the universal nature of Dhamma? What is the quintessence of Dhamma? If one does not understand the essence of Dham...

Re: Latest from "hardcore dharma"

I might be responsible for mentioning 'real Dhamma' in my last post. I can assure you it was merely a term of convenience to differentiate the Buddhadhamma from that which is inconsistent with the Buddhadhamma. I apologise if my words created confusion or the impression of sectarianism. kind regard...

Re: Latest from "hardcore dharma"

Please forgive my intrusion into this discussion, but a couple of things need to be asked: First, when and where did it become appropriate to charge a fee (or even suggest an amount of dana) for that which was freely given for the welfare and liberation of others? And second, what is this "real...

Hi Vipassana1501. Out of curiousity, are you enrolled at Sati or U of the West? Kind of figure it might be one of the two, being in southern California and all.
