Thanks fellas!
THis is a great start. But it still isn't so clear to me, after reading these sutta references, whether or not the arahat experiences no affective feelings at all. What do you think?

Does the Arahat experiences affective feelings?
Hi all, I am doing a bit of research into whether the arahat of the pali canon still experiences the arising of affective feelings, perhaps the more positive ones like affective compassion rather than the negative ones like hate. Could any of you knowledgable people point me towards a thread already...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
@Sylvester and Geoff, Although some interesting light is being shed, I am left wondering at you two and the way you go at it like a pair of teenagers. Do you guys have a history? It's absolutely uninspiring and ridiculous but thanks for the food for thought all the same. It be really interesting to ...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
Hi Geoff, So then to be completely clear, you think Mahasi Sayadaw is completely wrong? @Mods, I know this isn't Pali Sutta evidence, but I think to make an informed decision, I'd like to know if Geoff or anyone else thinks Mahasi Sayadaw's teachings are not in accordance with the Pali suttas. I rem...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
So, the question I have for whomever, and certainly for Ñāṇa, is this "black blankness" a feature of the Ledi Sayadaw, Mahasi Sayadaw, U Pandita, U Ba Khin traditions? I have not read everything they have written. As I said, in another related thread I have had such an experience. Interes...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
Ok, I see. But what if it got the job done? There is a spectrum of meditative states which can aid in one's development. But unconscious, non-perceptive states are neither the noble paths nor noble fruitions. When it comes to the noble path, if we don't rely on the canonical teachings, then we end ...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
And what if such a non-experience was followed by that very gnosis you stated? The noble path is not a "non-experience." This is a gross misrepresentation of the dhamma. Even the mention of such an absurd proposition would be laughable if not for the fact that there are people in this wor...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
Thanks for the reply Geoff. And what if such a non-experience was followed by that very gnosis you stated? It seems from some of the descriptions I've come across that it does lead to ridding the fetter of identity view. I keep seeing references to the 11th nana of the stages of insight where a medi...

Re: Patrick Kearney is not teaching the Pāḷi Dhamma
Hi Retro,
Point taken. However, I am more curious than making a point. I am very open minded and don't feel like defending anyone. I really would love to know if those I've quoted have no base to argue from in the Pali canon. It would be enormously helpful to know.

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
And another reference to the cessation of the senses by Jack Kornfield. Are they all wrong? (page 34) http://www.spiritrock.org/download/BDH.Summer07.Kornfield.pdf In Mahasi’s model, enlightenment – or at least stream-entry, the first taste of nirvana – comes in the form of a cessation of experience...

Re: Concerning Kearney's "Development of Insight"
I've tried to find reference to the cessation of all the senses talked about by U ba Khin. I remmeber ages ago I had on my old computer an old BBC video in black and white filmed in the 50's I think, of an interview with U Ba Khin and one of his students called Mr Venkataraman who could enter a stat...

Re: Sotappana: the path and fruit taught by the Buddha
Not to argue with anyone about what is the correct way to see things, but I have been reading on another forum of the so called pragmatic dharma movement and came across this. The guy talks about the cessation of all the senses or what people here are calling the "pitch black emptiness". W...

Re: Pitch-black emptiness and Mahasi Sayadaw technique
"The experience of unconsciousness" is far more easily induced by anesthesia, first of all. But that aside, I would ask those advocating this "event" as constituting "the actual experience of nibbana" as to what the value is in this. So there's a momentary, impermanent...
