Re: "If we owned our body, it would obey our every command"
The Dhamma’s understanding of the body in relation to attā is even much subtler than this—it is concerned with ‘self’ as subject —so if you find yourself having difficulty understanding these thoughts, you may want to start by reading a few articles that discuss the existential/phenomenological int...

Kammavipāko bhikkhave acinteyyo na cintetabbo, yam cintento ummādassa vighātassa bhāgī assa. AN 4.77
The ripening of action, monks, is unthinkable, should not be thought (i.e. should not be speculated about); for one thinking (it) would come to madness and distraction. ~ Ven. Ñanavira's translation
Re: Vande
It's the middle voice, first person singular indicative. It's only found in verse.

Re: Treasury of the Buddha's Discourses
It appears Ven. Sujato has included some of the translated suttas from A Treasury of the Buddha's Discourses on his SuttaCentral website, but not all of them.

Re: Monks who talk politics
Anulomikāya khantiyā samannāgato. It seems related to if not a part of the fourth factor for entering the stream, i.e. practice in accordance with the Dhamma. Ven. Ñanavira identified anulomikāya khantiyā samannāgato with the puthujjana : Taken in conjunction with what follows it, this evidently me...

Treasury of the Buddha's Discourses
A Treasury of the Buddha's Discourses [/i] was recently uploaded to archive.org. The 3-volume set is made up of 90 suttas from Ven. Ñanamoli's manuscript translation of the Majjhima Nikaya. Ven. Khantipalo's editing of the translation was far less than Ven. Bodhi's which makes it helpful in working...

Re: Monks who talk politics
Yes he was. I assumed you was using it in a modern sense. Regardless, if you and I discuss war or alcohol from a Buddhist POV are we being political? We could be, but we don’t have to be. It is possible to be apolitical, it’s just hard. We're laymen. Monks carry a gravitas that should make them lee...

Re: Monks who talk politics
That is the case with most debates, but it can still be productive for the viewers/listeners/readers. I was mostly on the side of B.Bodhi, but have moved more towards B.Thanissaro and others can be swayed one way or another too. The issue is whether monks should enter into such debates, which are b...

Re: Monks who talk politics
Some years back Ven. Bodhi and Ven. Ṭhānissaro got into a contentious dialogue over whether war was ever justifiable. Their views on the subject were polar opposites. So which one of them was teaching Dhamma? That's why there was a discussion, a debate to help figure that out. It was never resolved...

Re: Monks who talk politics
Protests and marches can always turn ugly pretty quickly. I’m not sure it’s a good look if a monk is pictured being bungled into a police van, and the Buddha was concerned with how monks and nuns are seen by the public. Even Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. who is an environmental lawyer is adamant about dis...
