Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

As someone who was recently embroiled in an interminable rebirth thread on another board, I can relate to this: I dont deny rebirth, its a view point that i have let go of because of the dukkha thats there If i denied it and said "there is no rebirth after death" then this is holding a vie...

Re: What Nikaya to start with when reading the Sutta Pitaka?

In purely literary terms, I'd go for the Khuddaka Nikaya. Buddharakkita's bilingual Dhammapada is excellent for getting a sense of the poetry of the Pali (the eight-syllable lines, etc.). Though Ananda Maitreya's English is perhaps a tad more authoritative. I kind of like H. Saddhatiss'a Sutta Nipat...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

Craig, do you have a source for that quote on rebirth? One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that much of Ajahn Buddhadasa's appeal, especially to students in the 70s, was as a result of his having embraced notions of "Buddhist Socialism" (not dissimilar to those of E.F. S...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

Ajahn Buddhadasa could be pretty dismissive towards earnest young Westerners, so that might partly explain why many gravitated to Ajahn Chah (who seems to have relished the challenge). Though I guess Ajahn Poh (who was always a tad more "amenable" than Ajahn Buddhadasa) continues that lega...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

The sutta isn't included in my 3-volume Nyanamoli MN ... So many thanks for drawing my attention to it, Individual. I wondered about the choice of "scold". Piya Tan translates it as "admonish" which seems a little less harsh (in the context of this discussion, also). http://early...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

You understand my point. It is frustrating to see a process of unbecoming turned into a process of becoming.
It IS profoundly ironic.

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

There IS so much in the Western Buddhist world to be irritated by ... If it isn't one weird trip, it's another ... Taken by people who are obviously desperate to convince themselves of stuff they haven't really assimilated, or taken to heart. But that's only if we let it irritate us, right? (And dee...

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism

Some Advaita sages, such as Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, would seem to come very close to Buddha Dhamma. To the point that to distinguish between, say, parabrahman (as presented in those texts) and the thirty-three synonyms for Nibbana (for example) might seem, in some ways, to be m...

Re: Ajahn Chah biography - narrated by Ajahn Jayasaro (video)

Apparently Ajahn Jayasaro was planning to write a biography, but has handed the material to Paul Breiter.

So that'll be a book to look forward to.

Ah! So I spoke too soon!

"Well-situated" as a staging ground for other things, perhaps ...

Thankyou, Bhante.

(And trusting you're in somewhat better health ...)

Re: Ordination in Thailand Info & Advice

Hi Nathan

I'm kind of surprised that people haven't mentioned Wat Bowon, as a possibility.

I was there in January visiting Phra Kevin, and he seems very well situated.
