Re: Being mortal, medicine and what matters in the end

Surely, we have to plan to die nobly and have this pact of understanding with our loved ones and institutions.

If we got diagnosed with cancer, or our partner broke a hip, etc. how will we plan for our respective exit in the most humane way?

Being mortal, medicine and what matters in the end

[Atul] Gawande has provided us with a moving and clear-eyed look at aging and death in our society, and at the harms we do in turning it into a medical problem, rather than a human one.... There is no way, of course, to make old age and all its infirmities disappear; it is what life deals us. But wh...

Re: A Manual for Creating Atheists - Peter Boghossian

Mkoli, it's quite true that 'saddha' in the Triple Gems is a pre-condition in following the Buddha's teaching. But i think this manual is targeting 'blind faith' rather than the sort of 'reasoned faith' the Buddha taught. Kim, your 'faith' in Darwinism is 'reasoned faith' based on evidence which can...

Re: A Manual for Creating Atheists - Peter Boghossian

Here is an interview with the author, on YouTube via The Thinking Atheist . --- Ultimately the author is setting up the Socratic Method for showing people who make religious claims that those claims might not actually have any foundation apart from preference, habit, and/or upbringing (e.g. traditi...

Re: A Manual for Creating Atheists - Peter Boghossian

Manas, u need to download the manual in order to read the pdf version of the book. Just click on the book, and the "arrow" at bottom right of the page for downloading to take place. I have downloaded the book and it's safe and free from virus on my MacBook. Kim, you can also read Sam Harri...

A Manual for Creating Atheists - Peter Boghossian

Has anyone read the manual yet?
Would like to know how this manual can affect the faith and beliefs of buddhist practitioners?

Re: Interesting interview with Sam Harris on meditatio

Dear Ben, Thanks for the reassurance! :toast: There's actually a survey that suggests middle aged starts from 55 :sage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19622330 Did u read this article that was a prelude to the one you posted? I think it seems to explain Harris' fascination with meditation and v...

Re: Interesting interview with Sam Harris on meditatio

He responded to the Al Jazeera article here : http://www.samharris.org/site/full_text/response-to-controversy2/ and doesn't come across as a fascist at all. His observation on the different teachings on violence by religions is validly argued if you don't hold a blind spot on Islamic tenets that urg...

Re: Rohan Gunatillake: Disrupting the Awakening Industry

Very thought provoking talk by Rohan G.. it made me wonder if his "buddhify" mobile app would really revolutionise the awakening industry more than the 10 day retreats have over the years... I am currently involved in the development of a retreat center here in africa and his wa...

Re: Off to Goenka!

Hi Lonesome Yoghurt, on my first course, I met a dancer who told me on Day 10 that it's better to quietly slip away and not let anyone know you are on a silent meditation retreat. A thousand and one things could pose as an obstacle to getting on a retreat. In hindsight, she's so right. Have a good r...

Thank you both for the links! Now I understand why his chanting doesn't sound anything like the written suttas at first. Does he start off with Hindi dohas and then go on to the Pali suttas? :anjali:

Goenka Chanting translation

The chanting translation on VRI website doesn't seem to be the literal translation of the morning chants by SN Goenka. http://www.vridhamma.org/uploadedfiles/mornenglishweb.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They seem to start off with some other sutta chanting before getti...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat

A few years back when I was researching on IVF (assisted fertility) treatments on the web, I found many forums n blogsites where forummers posted negative commentaries about their experiences and their doctors. Similarly, when I was researching on SN Goenka Vipassana meditation retreats, I found num...
