Re: Best translation of the Book of Protection?

I stumbled across the Book of Protection when looking for evidence that the original Pali suttas did indeed contain ceremonies or rituals, when some modern thinkers deny their existence and regard all rituals as cultural accretions and nothing to do with 'secular Buddhism'. There is a pdf for downlo...

Yeshe says 'hi'........... again ;)

A quick note to avoid confusion: Formerly posting as 'Upasaka', I had a Dharma name and have now decided to use part of it on Buddhist forums as it makes sense to do so. The name is 'Yeshe' which means 'wisdom'. It is obviously aspirational, not descriptive. The Geshe who gave it me had a wicked sen...

Re: E-Sangha

I have just tried the site. It caused Firefox to crash out and I lost some settings.
Thankfully, no warnings of anything nasty being sent my way.
I won't be trying again, though, until I read that it has been restored and any bad karma has been purified. LOL :)

Re: Attitudes of Western Buddhists: 5 Questions to Answer

More answers may be gained more quickly through organisations with large numbers of Western Buddhists, such as FWBO, FPMT, NKT etc. (There must be several Theravadan organisations with Western disciples as well. I know of one which is very much 'Westernised' IMHO - The Aukana Trust - http://www.auka...

Re: HH Dalai Lama in Australia 1-10 Dec 2009

On another issue, HHDL will have security costs. He is a prime target for terrorist attacks, as is the Pope and other prominent religious leaders. I attended an NKT Buddhist summer festival recently and noted that all the drain covers were sealed and numbered to prevent (presumably) bomb attacks - ...

Re: HH Dalai Lama in Australia 1-10 Dec 2009

Dharma teachings should always be free. The opportunity to make a donation may be communicated. All the groups I know need to hire rooms and the teacher has to travel to the venue. A fee for this is fine IMHO. Now, HHDL has the same issues - dharma free, premises and travel still to be funded. In th...

Re: Pali Canon - can it be attributed back to the Buddha?

It must be incredibly difficult to render anything in verse form into something carrying both the meaning and wording of the original (especially if there are several 'original' versions). I would prefer to read a translation of the Dhammapada which conveys the meaning precisely and the wording les...

Re: Lotus position

Ive being trying to get into this position but find it impossible, has anyone else had this trouble? Anyone know any good stretching tips? I advised my kids to keep stretching into adult life and maintain what they had. Too may of us don't. First tip - learn as a child and don't lose it. In the sam...

Re: Views and beliefs

There is a big debate today between Evolution and Creationism Despite Evolution being a fundemental fact of how life came to be and creationism having no supportable evidence at all people will still reject evolution and hold to creationism, to me this shows a complete lack of willingless to face r...

Re: Women can be Buddha

there is good reason to doubt some sutras, in fact any sutra that mention sit being wrten down and copied would be a fraud as the buddha lived in an oral culture so the process being talked about would come from a later time. also some of the mahayana sutras mention debates going on within the sang...

Re: Women can be Buddha

I have read all the major Mahayana suttas. Which one says that a woman can become a sammasambuddho? I don't know which one or if there is one, but Kwan Yin, Tara, and others are not samma-sam-buddhas. A samma-sam-buddha rediscovers the teachings after they have died out. In that sense, from a Thera...

Re: Women can be Buddha

No such problem in the Mahayana - Kwan Yin, Tara etc. LOL :) If you are referring to the history of misogyny in Buddhism, the Mahayana has not fared any better. All of the Zen patriarchs from Bodhidharma through modern times were male. All of the Dalai Lamas from the first to the current Tenzin Gya...

Re: The Buddha Chat diaspora.

Hi again, retro. I'm looking for Buddha Chat replacements. Places with high traffic and interesting discussions. This seems like a candidate. I'm asking about others, because a lot of people must have gone searching by now. Hi. I think you may be disappointed. Aside from E Sangha I don't think ther...

Re: Women can be Buddha

There was a topic here somewhere about women being Buddhas or not. Woman can be Buddha and if who you call "the buddha" has said that woman can not be buddha then he himself was not a buddha. how can an enlightened spirit, man or woman, leave his wife and his son behind and still be consi...
