Re: Christianity as a subset of Buddhism

It is also said that the Hebrew olam, as in Gen 21:33, is equivalent to the aeon ... Yes; well that, of course, nicely points up the dangers of advancing a radical theory entirely of your own confection which is based on a single word taken out of context. I won't debate the point with you, though:...

Re: Día de Muertos

In the 9th century, Amalarius of Metz began the practice of remembering the dead during the celebration of All Saints; but it was the important monastery of Cluny which first commemorated the dead on 2 November. Abbot Odilo, who died c. 1048, ordered the Clunaic houses to celebrate a memorial of all...

Re: Christianity as a subset of Buddhism

With respect, I think that is a misinterpretation of αἰώνιον as it is used both in the First Gospel and generally in the Christian foundation texts; and in my view, modern scholarship would not support your conclusions. Re: Christianity as a subset of Buddhism

I am not of the opinion that the Christian scriptures teach an eternal heaven, but rather a finite heaven. From what sources did the inspiration for that opinion come from? My own personal studies, especially into the Greek of the New Testament, e.g. "... δὲ δίκαιοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον" Mt 2...

Re: Scripture that is well known to those raised Buddhist

My experience of American Christians is not only have they not read the bible, they are only familiar with the interpretation that their favorite pastor or politician makes. :goodpost: In my experience too, what happens is that they tend to have read brief sections of their sacred texts, very littl...

Re: Buddha and Jesus, Is jesus a reincarnation of the Buddha

Around the ninth hour, Jesus shouted in a loud voice, saying אלי אלי למה עזבתני "Eli Eli lama sabachthani?" which is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:46 And at the ninth hour, Jesus shouted in a loud voice, אלי אלי למה עזבתני "Eloi Eloi lama sabachtha...

Re: Teacher fury over God comic

A bit of a historical artefact is that under the legislation framing state-provision of school education is the obligation for state schools to provide scripture lessons. Hi Ben Fascinating post. Whose particular version of scriptural exegesis (or eisegesis) are the state schools expected to provide?

In this, Tolkien was not unlike many Englishmen of a certain type of that time, who regularly adopted a rather mannered self-deprecating or diffident attitude in regard to their work (see JRR's comments in the introduction to the second edition of Lord of the Rings ). While purporting to humility, i...

Isn't it interesting how Gotama is represented in this clip as addressing Mara as "Architect"?
