Re: Why not ordain?
My goal is to establish a strong practice as a lay person first. My feeling is that if you can't establish a good practice as a lay person then you're probably not going to last long as a monk. That's why I'm trying to avoid getting married and having kids, because in 5 years if I want to take that...

Re: Bhikkhu Ñanananda
Hi All, I'm back from my trip to Sri Lanka -it was amazing to be in a such a spiritually saturated country (especially if you understand Sinhalese!). There has been such a great revival of buddhist teaching there.. In any case- I met Ven Nananda a few weeks ago. He was an amazingly intelligent man/...

panna-vimutti vs cetto-vimutti...busy life
i lead a busy life, still i cut down my commitments to the bare minimum such that mindfulness is rarely disturbed. However i get very little time for jhana practice. I hear that such practice is cetto-vimutti. Wheras an alternative is panna-vimutti. Using insight to cut the defilements. Could someon...

Re: Dhamma propagation
just set an example. Forget about '-isms'. The Dhamma is universal. Let it be fully effulgent in your thoughts words and deeds. Always speak Dhamma, do Dhamma, think Dhamma. Then your bhava becomes infectiuous when people see the good in it.

Re: suttas and the kasinas(vishudhimagga)
well i havent advanced much in my training and im from a place lacking a buddhist teacher. So the suttas provide me with most help. Does it mean perhaps that when one overcomes the 5 hindrances and withdraws completely from sensual lust then one enters the first jhana automaticly through practice of...

Re: suttas and the kasinas(vishudhimagga)
Actually, it's also in some of the MN Suttas. I'll try to find the reference later. My view is that the Suttas are very light on specific instructions. These techniques were taught by personal instruction (as today - see the sutta reference below), and it is likely that the various concentration te...

Re: karma yoga, bhakti yoga and the Dhamma
thank you tiltbillings for clearing that doubt. Been bothering me for quite some time. I feel there are several 'new age' teachers mixing up the Buddha's teachings in a similar way. For example Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra. Metta

karma yoga, bhakti yoga and the Dhamma
i used to be a devout hindu and used to live the practices of the bhagavad gita. In it karma yoga was suggested. What one has to do is COMPLETELY SURRENDER ones everyday thoughts words and actions and let go of everything every moment not thinking this or that is mine but is the Lords, and never set...
