Re: Ajahn Chandako to James - Transition to Laylife

There are more than 8 nice cabins on the monastery, but no other monks wanted to stay for very long, so it was a one-monk monastery for years and years. Well, if the dude's a bad monk, that's exactly his plan all along, making it so hard and unbearable for fellow monks so that they all would move t...

Re: vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ before or after kāye kāyānupassī ?

Hello all, I have a pali question. In Satipatthana suttas it says " Idha bhikkhave bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī [alex: and other 3] viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ [/u]" Does " vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ " refer to what happens prior to kāye kāyā...

Re: How to gain energy

Hello every dhammawheel member around the world, i want to tell you how to regain strenght if you feel weak. 1-.To recover energy, in the morning you can drink a juice blend of fruits and vegetables, prepared in the blender, you can use whatever you have on hand and make sure you use all colors. Fo...

Re: Ajahn Chandako to James - Transition to Laylife

thanks for this. I don't know who this monk/lay person is, and I'm always interested in how/why senior monastics choose to disrobe. It should be fairly simple, for at the most fundamental level, the only thing that separates lay life from monastics is the Patimokka 227 rules. So if a monk's not abl...

Re: Do we need to make an effort to control or should we not try to control our breathing during meditation?

Some people say, in meditation we need to make an effort to make our breathing subtle, deep and slow, while others say we shouldn't try to control our breathing, we should just observe it. What is your opinion on this? Different people use different methods, so treat it like a scientific experiment...

Re: What makes Theravada conservative?

Maybe not in the political sense, but what makes it conservative compared to other sects like Zen? we can only speak in very general terms, cuz ultimately it really depends on the individual practitioner. There could be Zen practitioners that adheres much more strictly to the Buddha Dhamma and Code...

Re: Is the nature of the mind is ignorance?

Is the nature of the mind is ignorance? "nature of the mind" is probably too abstract a term to be used. To be more concrete, lets call it modes of operation. The mind's default mode of operation is ignorance. It also possesses the "enlightened" mode of operation, but this is so...

Re: The Right to Refuse Donation

I remember reading that a monk can and must refuse food that is offered at the wrong time and also if it is one of the forbidden meats, for example, lion, elephant, human, etc. What’s wrong with lion, elephant, non registered human flesh? human flesh meat? Yum yum ... those poor monks don't know wh...

Re: Supernormal power and gold coins

I am bit childish but if i create gold coins using jhanic power, i sell it and make money, do i break 4th precept of stealing? Bad karma for deception? Problem is high level of jhanic power is attained by deep concentration, which in turns possible only with pure moral virtues. If for some reason, ...

I have seen previous discussions on this issue Most of it was about distribution or copying In case of a Copyright infringement I wonder it's wrong to read such things Sutta, Atthakatha, teachings of a teacher There are many things on the Internet  Think about it, the only Dhamma copyrigh...

...Not that I am convinced that there even could be a helpful summarization in just one sentence. Obviously from a practical perspective, a summarization of the Dhamma in 1 sentence won't do anybody any good. Ultimately, the point of describing any discipline in 1 sentence is really just a way to c...

He said that to have heard the phrase sabbe dhamma nalam abhinivesaya, is to have heard every phrase of the Teachings, to have put it into practice is to have done every practice and to have reaped the fruits of that practice is to have reaped every fruit of the Buddhist Teachings. So? Jhana in and of itself is not something exclusive to just Buddha's disciples. The Buddha before discovering His Dhamma already learned and attained high-level Jhanas from His outsider-teachers.

Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi on War and Thanissaro's rebuttal

Santa has suggested that in order to be qualified to criticise Bodhi I need to go to Ukraine to get myself shot in the head and paralysed. No reasonable discussion seems possible with him as he seems merely to be intent on shutting it down with bullying and abusive speech. Wrong, I did not suggest ...
