Re: What the Zennies say...?

I recently spoke to a Seon nun who suggested that practices like Anapanasati, Jhana and so on can actually exagerate the ego instead of revealing its nature. She recommended practices like Hwadu/Koan in order to directly address the ego. Thoughts...? BB... Well firstly it is problematic and as this...

Re: "Others are cruel, we shall not be cruel"

Great thread, starter. Having been subject to baseless lies, accusation and hypocrisy recently, it is a good reminder.
Merci.

Re: Morning meditation

Remember that most retreats will have you going to bed around ten or so - it only takes a day or two to really get used to that schedule if you work towards it in the week or so beforehand. In general, one needs less sleep during a retreat. After all, you're not doing much but sitting! I don't thin...

Re: How do you contemplate anatta?

Sure, but some people do manage to lose weight. ;) If form were self, one could eat as much as one likes and not get fat but since it is not so ........ One could command the body not to get sick or grow old. Agreed. But I don't find the "lack of control over the aggregates" argument for ...

Re: Western Theravda organisations - propagation?

I am generalizing here because there are some exceptions, but what I have noticed is that the Ajahn Chah based monasteries / Ajahn Brahm monasteries and the bhikkhuni monasteries seem to be doing a good job at propagation and developing a sense of community among Western-convert Buddhists and the A...

Re: Is it still possible to get enlightened?

In the way the Buddha talked about? Yes or no? Is there any 'evidence'? It also seems like a lot of different people mean a lot of different things by enlightenment. I would have thought yes, and I would have thought that nothing anybody else says can actually prove it. That's why Buddhism is so di...

Re: Is it still possible to get enlightened?

Here's what Ajaan Lee Dhammadaro said about it: When I first became aware of the conflicting views held by people who practice — and of how ill-informed they are — I felt inspired by their desire to learn the truth, but at the same time dismayed over their views: right mixed with wrong, some people ...
