Re: Yardwork

Plants are living organisms which grow in the earth and have the ability to convert sunlight into the energy they need for growth. Buddhism considers plants to be one-facultied (ekindriya) life forms (Vin.III,155). The traditional way of classifying plants in ancient India was as medical herbs (osa...

Re: The results of sensuality

Friend santa100,

I agree with you. However, I only ask for an analogy, preferably from the pali canon, to get a better idea of the thing going on.

Re: The results of sensuality

"Bhikshus, one having sensual desires is reborn as an individual into this or that existence depending
on what constitutes merit or on what constitutes demerit"
But how am I supposed to understand/see this? I believe that it is true out of respect for the Buddha but I cannot see it.

The results of sensuality

And what is the result of sensuality? One who wants sensuality produces a corresponding state of existence, on the side of merit or demerit. -http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an06/an06.063.than.html Greetings, What is the detailed meaning of this statement? With reference to the quoted st...

Re: The truth value of Hell realms

Here is some text I found on a site (http://www.floweringofgoodness.org/buddhist-scriptures-61.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) without any references. The Eight Great Narakas (Hells) There are the Sanjiva, Kalasutta, Sanghata and also the Roruva, the Maharoruva, Tapa, M...

Cause effect diagram

Hello, Owing to a variety of cause-effect suttas I had trouble understanding/remembering the nuances and decided to make a diagram and also tried to incorporate the four noble truths in it (which didn't work out too well). There are plenty of charts on the internet but I found none of them satisfact...

Re: Meditation for anxiety

When I'm anxious and this comes to my attention, I recollect the virtues of the Triple Gem, the virtues of the devatas etc. Such recollections cause unskilful mental qualities to subside.

Re: Meditation for anxiety

"Now, on any occasion when the mind is restless, that is the wrong time to develop analysis of qualities as a factor for awakening, persistence as a factor for awakening, rapture as a factor for awakening. Why is that? The restless mind is hard to still with those mental qualities. "Now, ...

Re: Right Livelihood and being a biologist

Jeff, Why is it acceptable (in the eyes of some) to mindfully consume meat but not mindfully take an animal's life? I don't want to get sidetracked though since I know that there has been much discussion on meat eating. It is possible to eat meat with a mind devoid of passion, aversion and delusion ...

Re: Right Livelihood and being a biologist

Hi, If there is any guilt in connection with your past deeds then remember the following words from the sutta pitaka. A guilty state of mind is unwholesome, leads to the arising and growth of restlessness and other unskilful qualities, and should be abandoned. "These two are fools. Which two? T...

Re: When a person is coming to the end of his life...

Here's a 'charm' which might help cultivate calmness, serenity, ease etc. I have good will for footless beings, good will for two-footed beings, good will for four-footed beings, good will for many-footed beings. May footless beings do me no harm. May two-footed beings do me no harm. May four-footed...

Re: The Dhamma outside Buddhism....

Is it not possible that the 'Father' being referred to is an impersonal entity, the laws of the Universe, the Dhamma, which does indeed have the power to cast one into hell unless stream entry is attained?
