Re: stone head syndrome

I think I had the same thing for some period because I was trying to concentrate too much or trying too hard. This short video by Sogyal Rinpoche might give you some advise on the kind of attitude/mind you should have during meditation. Spaciousness or relaxation is a big part of it  ! http:/...

Re: difference between bhanga and nibbana

Hi Ben, Thanks for the advice. I did try this twice on retreat but it tends to be quite hard to express myself in those situations. I'll send an e-mail to a centre then in order to have this clarified by an assistant teacher. James, I'm not buying everything that that book says, but I think it did c...

Re: difference between bhanga and nibbana

Ow no I'm not so deluded that I'm saying I'm free from delusion ;) . Yes I have served before and it's definitely a good experience (before I did that I didn't think that it would have so much depth). It's also nice to talk about it a bit. There is one book which was helpful to me called Mastering t...

Re: difference between bhanga and nibbana

Alright thanks for the effort James, altough I have to admit it's still not entirely clear to me. To answer your question, yes I've done several (Goenka) Vipassana courses. This question arose while reading a book ( For The Benefit Of Many by S.N. Goenka). At some point it is said that bhanga must c...

difference between bhanga and nibbana

Can anyone explain the difference between these terms (used in Vipassana by Goenkaji)?

Thank you

Re: Vipassana for anger management? Please help!

Goenkaji speaks in his discourses that Vipassana will help you when you practice it in the right way. Don't expect this to happen within a single course though. If it took you 20 years to build up these irriational thought patterns, then it might take you another 20 years to get rid of them. Practic...

Re: Self-Defence

#1 Running away - I fight that didn't happen is a fight that you've won for sure in case your attacker is faster, or it can't be avoided: #2 I'd say Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - it's a martial art where you don't even have to throw a punch/kick to defend yourself (it's rather about controlling 'the enemy' ...

Re: Observing a wandering mind stops the thought immediately

"the moment I become aware of the thinking the thought drops dead into silence. So, this isn't a problem?" I think a lot of people would consider this bit of silence in your mind a blessing Ytrog. Enjoy that silence  "Since mental states arise first in the unconscious, to catch...

Re: Observing a wandering mind stops the thought immediately

I once heared the following which might be helpful: if you are observing thoughts, then you'll notice that there is a gap in between the thoughts (after the last thought ended and when the next thought hasn't arisen yet). Simply observe the thought when there is one and rest in the gaps between the ...

Re: Greetings from Belfast

:hello: Thanks for the warm welcomes. I'll give a short introduction (seeing that this is the introductions-page). I'm from the South of Holland but I'm living in Belfast now since half a year. I'm 25 years old and a couple of years back I read my first book on Buddhism called The Tibetan book of Li...

Re: How long should one sit?

It's not so much the time you spend on meditating in the beginning I guess, but more that you practice on a daily basis. Practicing 10 minutes every day brings more result then sitting for an hour on Sunday. You can compare this with brushing your teeth (brushing your teeth every day for 5 minutes i...
