Re: Origins of Kasina Meditation?

Direct question... do you see any similarity between the Visuddhimagga's earth teaching and the Buddha's teaching? I dislike Visuddhimagga. Let's take Vimuttimagga. And Sutta as Buddha's teaching. Vimuttimagga does not teach about earth. That would be geology . I see many passages in Vimutt...

An excerpt from thomaslaw's comment The body originates from food Can you clarify to the Forum on Early Buddhism , how Choong or you understood the words "body" and "food?" . Were these words understood by Choong, as in Early Buddhism or as in Late Buddhism? There are several la...

Re: The great cappucciNO SELF debate

The Dhamma is timeless, but it is always changing. No… Don't misrepresent the Blessed One. Explain how the Dhamma is always the same? For as long as samsara lasts it will be marked by the three characteristics Is it a structure in logic that can be found by any species to always represent the exact...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa

I heard Nietzsche saw a man beating his horse and lost his mind. Did he really think he was Christ? I have read that he believed Jesus to be the anti-Christ, and yes, the story of a man beating a horse coincided with his mental breakdown - as the story goes. I do not remember where i read it, but w...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa

OP wrote Not long ago, i watched an interview with Bernardo Kastrup about Nietzsche. He said that his significance is that he lived by his Philosophy - which ended him up in a mental hospital believing that he is Christ. He acknowledged Dukkha, but did not believe in renunciation. hmm....maybe this...

Re: sīlabbata parāmāsa

I think it is due to the nature of Kamma and Vipaka in rites and rituals. For instance Sila and Samadhi. They are led to a favorable rebirth, not to final liberation. Many pre-Buddhist believed they led to final liberation not knowing the nature of Kamma and Vipaka fully. One of the things i contem...

Venerables and friends, If we were to coin the term "Buddhist Puritanism" what would he the most accurate description of it? So you coin it and we define it from a group of selections? Okay. :) Fair play Another form of seeking purity is learning pali - which is the language spoken by the...

Re: Practices around Dependant Origination

Can’t speak for Joe, but the virtue and sense restraint, but more to the point, the lifestyle, cannot be overstated. Too many contemporary notions of meditation point to available benefits on account of mental striving alone, and that is really misleading. A person developed in virtue and restraint...

Re: Are You prepared For an earthquake?

“Ānanda, there are these eight causes and reasons for a great earthquake. What eight? This great earth is grounded on water, the water is grounded on air, and the air stands in space. At a time when a great wind blows, it stirs the water, and the water stirs the earth. This is the first cause and r...

And why is it called “perception”?

A rather weird line from the suttas And why do you call it 'perception'? Because it perceives, thus it is called 'perception.' What does it perceive? It perceives blue, it perceives yellow, it perceives red, it perceives white. Because it perceives, it is called perception. How do we interpret this?...

No, but is it the case they don't breathe? The gods of the brahma realm have no gender, no need to eat food, no need to breathe, is what LBT theravada literature says. They do jhana to intake nutrition. How can they do Jhana without a physical body to feel bliss? ;) He said they don’t have genders....

I might add that *establishing* mindfulness at “the fore” is a simple process which involves active listening; or feeling; tasting; looking; or smelling. What other dimension would mindfulness refer to than the senses? It is when we, for example, actively listen that our mind is filled with the sati...

When you close your eyes, what do you see? If my eyes aren’t focused, I notice darkness and nothing else. If my eyes are focussed, I notice darkness and I also notice a whole plethora of “consciousness” in my visual field. This includes “eye bugs” which are those little “floaty things” which exist i...

Is stinky urine still free in the UK? Huh? Mendicants, these four trifles are easy to find and are blameless. What four? Rag-robes … A lump of almsfood … Lodgings at the root of a tree … Rancid urine as medicine … https://suttacentral.net/an4.27/en/sujato?lang=en&layout=plain&reference=none...
