Prasangika Differences...
Hello all, What are the main differences between Emptiness as taught by Nargajuna and Shantideva for example, and anatta as taught in classical Theravada? Are there any differences? What I see as the main difference is that the Prasangikas for example teach about the illusory nature of reality and i...

Is withdrawing from the senses entirely healthy?
Hi all, At times in my practice Anapanasati feels too much like a distraction from a calm that I experience by just having a bare awareness, Shikantaza(esque). Then at others the calmness described feels a little too comfortable and I will then shift awareness to the breath. Seems to work for me, I'...

Re: Bare Attention
I guess also, if there is little difference between Silent Illumination and 'Bare Attention' why would the Chan tradition seem to claim it as their own tracing it back to Hongzhi and probably further?

Bare Attention
Hi,
Can anyone offer some links to the practice of Bare Attention in the Theravadin tradition? Sounds like it might be very similar to the Zennies Silent Illumination/Shikantaza.
Might go some way top helping me reconcile my previous post in here.
Thanks!

Re: This is becoming a real problem now...
Hi bb, If you recognise the two as being the same in function, can I ask : what, practically speaking, is the problem? What kind of obstacles does it create for you to train in a method sometimes with a flavour of 'chan' and sometimes with a flavour of 'theravada' if the method remains the same? An...

A5 Chanting book
Hi,
I have downloaded a selection of Chanting book(lets) that all print off at A4 size, which feels a tad awkward when sitting - does anyone know where I can purchase the small A5 size ones I have seen?
Thanks for your help,

Re: This is becoming a real problem now...
at wat pah nanachat, I was told how at least one student who was new to meditation was handed a copy of Zen Mind, Beginners Mind because "it says the same thing as what we're doing, but it's not as dry as the suttas." I've been told similar things from monastics at Cittavevika. So it may ...

Re: This is becoming a real problem now...
...bizarre that such a small and superficially innocuous thing can have such a huge impact on a long established practice. I am thinking it might be to do with some form of identity. Feeling 'Theravadin' or feeling 'Zennie' when seduced by a particular practice/tradition. I keep telling myself these...

Re: This is becoming a real problem now...
I guess it feels like I have to embrace all the attributes that come with a particular practice. For example, I gather the majority I'd you have a shrine/altar that is in essence recognisable as a Theravadin shrine. So by proxy you are enjoying the Thai(ness) for example of this tradition. Maybe eve...

This is becoming a real problem now...
Hello everyone, A bit of self disclosing here now as I have tried all other avenues to no avail... I have always been interested in different meditation forms, different traditions and their various practices. This has often led to a sense of confusion as to why some 'Buddhist' traditions are in app...

Re: Sloth Torpor or Jhana...?
Ian thanks so much for taking the time to reply so comprehensively. I will indeed read the link. its a difficult time for me at the moment re my practice and has been for a while now. I've been verging on turning my back on what potentially could be something important.

Sloth Torpor or Jhana...?
When getting deeper into our practice how can we differentiate between our concentration becoming more focused and consequently a quieter mind and lapsing into a numbness that just feels good? I sometimes practice Silent Illumination (Shikantaza Jp. Just Sitting) and often get a real sense of there ...
