Re: Ordination in Thailand
Maybe it would be good advice not to travel to Thailand during the Rains Retreat (vassa) from 2 AUG to 30 OCT 2014 as most monasteries will be full and busy. After the Rains Retreat the monasteries will return to normal and resident monks will have more time to talk to visitors. Just to get the righ...

Re: seven days with zero tobacco
Good job so far Manas If you can stop for 7 days you can stop forever. Don't start after the 7 days. I stop smoking 16 month ago and I can tell you the first days are the worst and then it slowly fade away, today I never think of it, and I feel as I haver never smoked. Just keep up the good work, yo...

Re: Mods, when you deny a "Discovering Therevada" post...
Hello everyone. I totally support the current politic, and I think all Mods do a very good job, compared to many other boards, Dhammawheel is always a pleasent place to be, so let us keep it that way. I have also had post deleted, but I don't mind, it is not a big deal, and the idea with a "tra...

Re: Next life and the Buddhist path
digity wrote I'm constantly evaluating my inner world to see if it's becoming more clear and refined. In some areas it is and in other areas it continues to be a mess. There's certain aspects of my personality, which I feel will always be flawed...like my anxiety...and I wonder if I'll ever experie...

Re: Next life and the Buddhist path
Hi Digity Don't worry, just practise. If you practise deligently and continously, develop Sila,Samadhi and Panna to the best of your abbilities, then you are on the path and the possibilities about what will happen in the future are good, that is the whole idea of the path. Remember don't use time o...

Re: Buddhism vs Everyday Life..
My plan is to practice law in order to help people and to raise a family. But now I feel like that is desire and therefore wrong Remember in English we have only the word desire and therefore it is rather problematic. In Pali we have Tanha, unwholesome desire-craving. And we have Chanda, wholesome ...

Re: How important is keeping Precepts?
:goodpost: For me, the precepts are the foundation. When I keep the precepts I feel happy. When I feel happy I am relaxed. When I am relaxed I concentrate easily. When I concentrate easily I meditate better. When I meditate better, I am a little closer to nibbanna. Totally agree Sila is the cornerst...

Re: Any Theravada branches compatible with annihilationism?
Hello Are there any branches of Theravada, no matter how modern or unorthodox, where holding this belief is acceptable, or am I just plain not a Buddhist? I can't pretend to be agnostic on this issue - cessation of the mind at death is a core belief for me. The answer to your question is clearly no ...

Re: Enlightenment...Nirvana...I am arahat
@manas, Agreed. Trying to crush the craving for sensual pleasure is difficult/exhausting because we have not fully penetrated things as they really are. It's like a hostile companion or even Gollum for the reason that it follows you even when you don't see or sense it. Most times, it follows you whe...

Re: Words & Understanding
Hello Why do you want to put it into words? From what I get from your post, you understand it, but are unable to put words on the experince, that is fine, the important thing is for you to understand it. Many times if we try to put words on our experinces, especially meditation experinces, we only c...
