emails/subscriptions yet
Hello: I've been away for the past 4 months teaching, and I am wondering if the email subscriptions for dhamma wheel are working yet? Are there any plans for this feature to work? By feature, I mean when someone responds to your post, you get an email notification at your home email that someone has...

Re: MN 10. Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta
Hi Sher Using foulness is part of the satipatthana as well- note the 'five hindrances' include knowing ways of getting rid of them. I think the Buddha would have approved of your seeing mold etc to get rid of the craving as what matters is not the external method you are using but the end result. H...

Re: MN 10. Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta
Connected in an around about way the essay by Nyanaponika Thera on the four nutriments is an incredible (for me) way of looking at things...especially the 'four frames of reference'...for those unfamiliar with it, check it out... http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nyanaponika/wheel105.html&...

Re: MN 10. Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta
Foulness How important is contemplation on foulness--the bodily parts and charnel ground contemplations? Are we doing this in the US or in the West? How are we doing this? I live in Alaska in the wilderness, and the closest thing I have to a charnel ground is the salmon spawning streams. I have one ...

Re: MN 10. Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta
Hello All: I have a practical question regarding this sutta and practice, and it is difficult for me to formulate, but here goes... Example: A person has just eaten one or two delicious cookies, and he reaches for another, and as he begins to bite into the second cookie he becomes aware that he is c...

Re: What's up with Bhikkhu Bodhi
To elaborate on that... I find it takes all my time and energy just to try to understand one tradition. Trying to understand many traditions and then trying to merge them together is just more work than I am interested in. Hi Peter! I am smiling -- and so agree with what you just said. Thanks, Sher

Re: What's up with Bhikkhu Bodhi
Hello sher, His comments on Buddhism and psychology and pure vipassana meditation and on the weaknesses of western Buddhism and his comments on the possibilities and hopes found in western Buddhism made me thoughtful. What sort of thoughts? And why ought it to be of concern that one sees the common...

Re: What's up with Bhikkhu Bodhi
From the website... "The origins of Bodhi Monastery lie in the comprehensive, non–sectarian vision of Master Yin–Shun, the foremost Chinese scholar–monk of modern times, whose work has inspired a Buddhist intellectual renaissance in Taiwan. In line with the vision of Master Yin–Shun, Bodhi Mon...

Re: Theravadin Cosmology
BTW, I highly recommend Great Disciples of the Buddha, if you can get a hold of a copy. Metta Ben Thanks Ben, I looked, and it is available through Wisdom in the UK. It is interesting to note that the suttas allow us to learn about these people who became arahants just by listening to the Buddha sp...

Re: Theravadin Cosmology
is it true that "our" Buddha visited Tusita heaven? I believe I recall sutta reference for this...? But this was done before the "going beyond." But he visited Tusita heaven and Metteyya was also there...? Yes, according to the Abhidhamma, the Buddha visited his mother in Tusita...

Re: Theravadin Cosmology
Arahants are gone beyond. But with 31 planes of existence, I imagine some might be somewhat similar to the Pure Land the Mahyana describes (without buddhas, though). Metteyya is in the Tusita heaven and I imagine being reborn there to hear him talk and teach would be of great benefit. Is it true th...

Recently I was looking at the Bodhi Monastery where Bhikkhu Bodhi is now living and teaching from. http://www.bodhimonastery.net/bm/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I was struck by the combination on Theravadin and Mahayana in Bodhi's current teachings and by the structure o...

Theravadin Cosmology
Hello Everyone: Is there any foundation in Theravadin Cosmology for Pure Lands (something like Pure Lands--I use the term just to give an example)? I understand there are thirty-one realms of existence that one can be reborn into according to the Pali sources. And it is possible to be reborn in a he...
