Re: Critique of "jhana among Western converts"

I think that ignobleone subscribes to the theory that Venerable Buddhaghossa (and others ) were Brahmins, Who are the others? and inserted vedic teachings into the Commentaries and the Visuddhimagga. Why don't you provide the otherwise proof? One thing for sure you should be aware of, Vimalaramsi i...

Re: Critique of "jhana among Western converts"

Unfortunately the article doesn't mention each Teacher's actual instructions pertaining to jhana. It makes me want to investigate every mentioned teacher except the last two of them: 1) Leigh Brasington - because I've found his teaching is not in accordance with the Buddha's instruction. (I have add...

Re: Order of Learning/Practicing Dhamma

Is there a specific sequential order in which one must pratice/learn the dhamma in order to reach the final goal? If so, what is this order? A rare and very good question. Not many ask this, yet it's very important to keep in mind. In term of learning phase, there are three phases: 1. Pariyatti: le...

Anyone here is not a convert Buddhist?

Just want to gauge how many non-convert Buddhists (disregarding race) are active in this forum.

Re: The Great Jhana Debate

I guess the 'cult warner' and JhanaStream could be the same person.

The 'cult warner' still owe me some sutta reference. His absence I regard as the failure to prove what he said.
Anyway, there's one thing I can agree with him, i.e. he said most monks are clueless.

Re: Buddhism cult

Please differentiate between "can not have" and "don't have". "Don't have" doesn't mean "can not have". In Buddhist context, 'faith' means faith in Tathagata. Of course if you talk about Jainism, 'faith' means faith in Jainism. That seams false! it was a ques...

Re: Buddhism cult

My anonymous cult warner seems to stop responding since I demanded sutta references which support his points/claims. He said: 1)Sotapanna is an enlightened being. 2)Jhanas can only be reached by Sakadagami and above. As far as I can remember, I know only Arahat does have something to do with jhana. ...

Re: Disagreeing with Leigh Brasington

He doesn't practice rightly since he doesn't follow the Buddha's instruction. He also missed some other clues in suttas. It's because he doesn't believe the instruction is quite well preserved (sutta is incomplete) , thus he established his own subjective measure. So, to have practiced rightly we s...

Re: Buddhism cult

buddhists = have sadha, non-buddhists = don't have buddhist = Buddha follower, Mr. Gotama = follows himself? Please give me a break! so a non-buddhist can not have faith that there is enlightenment, a way to enlightenment, and those who have practiced rightly so can declare that path? I think the J...

Oooh... be careful. That's how "Buddhist" cults start!

Metta,
Retro. :)
Also be careful you need to be able to recognize Buddhist cults.

Re: Buddhism cult

Dhamma includes everything. Simple Dhamma is easy to see by anyone, but higher level, sublime Dhamma is not easy and not for everyone. This may be so, but being a "buddhist" is not a required condition to see higher Dhamma. I would say Mr. Gotama himself wasn't a "buddhist"... b...

Re: Buddhism cult

Dhamma includes everything. Simple Dhamma is easy to see by anyone, but higher level, sublime Dhamma is not easy and not for everyone. So do you consider that you understand "higher level, sublime Dhamma" yourself, ignobleone ? . I never mean to say so. It's just for an information. Ehipa...
