Re: The Dalai Lama's Solution to Overpopulation

That's one method..

Or we could all turn gay. Might be difficult at first, but I'm sure we'd all get used to it.

Re: How to answer the morality question?

I have come across several people who say that it is only by believing in a creator God that one can be a moral person. They took it a step further and asked what is the origin of morality in Buddhism, from where did this concept of a morality come from if not from a creator God? Ethics is about ho...

Re: The Best Place To Start

Where would the best place for me to start learning about Buddhism? Reading books/essays/websites or from a person? Depends on your means and location. There are many good online references (including this forum). There are also many good books. If you want an overview of all the streams of...

Re: Are you Pagan?

I think using the term "Pagan" that way is a bit confusing. Since it's the label for the pre-Christian religions. (I prefer Neo-pagan for modern reconstructions of old traditional pantheons, but that's just me.)

Re: Do you smoke?

I quit cigarettes today. I've only been smoking for a few months, but I'm already really addicted; I smoke about a pack a day... The reason I'm quitting is that the US government is putting pictures of dying people (and similar images) on every packet of cigarettes in the near future. I looked at on...

Re: Suicide and Euthanasia according to Theravada

[Speculative alert] Could Channa's suicide also have been blameless because his physical pain made him un-useful to the non-awakened? I mean, from what little I understand, an arahant lives as a field of merit and to lead other people as an example. They don't live for personal enjoyment. Seeing a b...

Re: How does one's karma produce external events?

Although maybe kamma only refers to the effects of our actions on our future rebirth. I'm not that knowledgable on the term.

Best wishes :pig:

Re: How does one's karma produce external events?

I don't think karma can make a boulder hit someone. But I do think that if you are generally an indecent person (or a rake, or a drunk, etc) that these can influence your life here and now. Buddha says in the Kalama sutta : "'If there is a world after death, if there is the fruit of actions rig...

Re: Batchelor's "Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist"

I disagree with Bachelor because I think he's a bit dishonest... Maybe a bit to himself.

It's one thing to deny rebirth and kamma. It's another to take your denial (right or wrong) and apply it to a historical thinker without strong evidence.

also im not making a dichotomy, im saying that this sort of mental sophistication sides with mental health whereas materialism sides with being what most materialists are, hedonists who cultivate immorality with great hunger. I know plenty of materialists who think that religious folks are out and ...

Re: what's wrong with eating meat?

I think you can look at the question a few ways. According to the suttas, eating meat isn't kammically relevant. So long as you don't kill it yourself or have it killed specifically for you, you aren't breaking a precept. But that doesn't mean a Buddhist can't have ethical objections to eating meat,...
