Buddha on looking on the opposite sex
And the Blessed One said: [3] “Guard against looking on a woman. [4] “If ye see a woman, let it be as though ye saw her not, and have no conversation with her. [5] “The samana who looks on a woman as a woman, or touches her as a woman, has broken his vow and is no longer a disciple of the Tathagata....

I think Buddha believed in heaven and hell where one dwells after death. Didn't he?Buckwheat wrote:That's your opinion, but not at all what the Buddha taught.paarsurrey wrote:This all happens in this life and continues when one goes into heaven after death, in the afterlife, in my opinion.

Re: Buddhism, rebirth and suicide
Greetings, If one rejects the idea of rebirth then so too does the concept of nirvana no longer make sense. This makes no sense to me. To paraphrase what Aloka said elsewhere recently... nirvana is for the enlightened, not the dead. Metta, Retro. :) Because as I understand it, nirvana is the breaki...

Re: "Living in the Present Moment"
I think while living in this world one should do acts and deeds that lead one to slavation or nirvana; that is living in the present moment really and truthfully otherwise one would be lead astray from the right or middle path.

Re: For how many eons was the Buddha a bodhisatta?
For how many eons was the Buddha a bodhisatta? I don't think Buddha delayed nirvana or salvation out of compassion of others; it is not reasonable. It seems to be like Christians who think that Jesus died for atonement of others. Buddha and Jesus attained salvation or the goal of life; only then th...

Re: Buddhism, rebirth and suicide
I don't think Buddha believed in physical multiple rebirths of man; it is primarily a Hindu concept got mixed up with Buddhism. Buddha meant, in my opinion, spiritual forms one resembles while treading on the middle path till one attains salvation; it is all in one span of life not in multiple rebir...

I think steadfastness on treading on the right or middle path is essential for any moral or spiritual progress.

Re: Buddhism, rebirth and suicide
Buddha taught of a middle path; if one follows Buddha one won't commit suicide; despite sufferings he did not teach or allow one to commit suicide.

Re: Giving away lots of PDF Books for free
Yesterday, I uploaded on my website nearly all of the PDF Dhamma books I had collected on my computer over time. I was reminded by Ven. Pesala about copyright restrictions, and so I have removed documents that clearly stated were not to be freely distributed. Books include: Visuddhimagga, Vimuttima...

I think one should teach when one has acted upon the teaching oneself before one teaches to others.

Re: happiness
I would like to quote following from Buddha on happiness: 1. "I have recognized the deepest truth, which is sublime and peace-giving, but difficult to understand; for most men move in a sphere of worldly interests and find their delight in worldly desires. 3 "The worldling will not underst...

Re: Kill the Buddha- save the world
Killing the Buddha By Sam Harris “Kill the Buddha,” says the old koan. “Kill Buddhism,” says Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith, who argues that Buddhism’s philosophy, insight, and practices would benefit more people if they were not presented as a religion. The ninth-century Buddhist master Li...

Re: Sotāpanna requirements
I think meditation or prayer to seek help from the Immortal Creator is essential... Please correct me if I am wrong. According to the Dhamma, there is no immortal creator, so seeking help from such a being is impossible and fruitless. In fact, holding to such a view of partial or complete eternalis...

Re: Is becoming expainable?
From what little I've gathered, it would seem that dependent origination or co-arising is the cornerstone to the Buddha's teaching of a self-sustaining cycle. Now I know that if one rejects craving that it breaks this cycle since craving leads to clinging... but then... what is becoming? Becoming:T...
