Re: Student Of The Path
Had my Upasampadā today, I am now Bhikkhu Jayasāra. It's been a long road since about 2010, but i've come to the end... and yet just the beginning. https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/14712628_10210453741440350_8413738821273826717_o.jpg https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/14711175...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
PP Sutra 8000 lines, Chapter XI Subhuti: What kind of obstacles are these? The Lord: The Bodhisattvas discoursing this perfection of wisdom, either understand this after a long time, or, as understanding is generated, it immediately becomes disturbed. Or some write yawning, laughing and sneering, or...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
It can be done another way, the bathtub... Mahayana criticizes Hinayana They don't understand emptiness, but how do we know? They reject the body as a mass of suffering. Since they do that they cannot remain in samsara in a state of bliss like a bodhisattva. Why do they reject the body? They must ha...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
If you were to display some logic grounded in actual facts/examples, that might be interesting, but so far it is pretty much just you expressing your disdain of the Mahayana. Not much to go on, but thank you for sharing your opinions; however, as for opinions, including my own, I'll stick with Seng...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
Neocolonialism and the work to understand what Buddha said have nothing to do with one another. It is a forensic exercise. It employs scientific and logical principles. They may be right or wrong, but it is a worthy thing to do given the age of the material. Some folks might want to use this to fix...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
Oh dear, another one of these neocolonial sutta-exclusivist "Original Buddhists" Don't presume. You don't know where I'm from. I'm an Indian. You don't need to be white to be subject to neocolonial discourses. Either way if you want to continue this, PM me or whatever. We don't...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
No. I don't care about Theravada except that for the forensic work of reconstructing what Buddha really said, the Pali is the best bet. I discount all their Abhidhamma and meditation manuals. Oh dear, another one of these neocolonial sutta-exclusivist "Original Buddhists" Don't...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
Only Mahayana disagrees with Hinayana. Theravada is not Hinayana and does not disagree with Mahayana about what Mahayana says. Hinayana is a Mahayana straw man.

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
I thought it would be obvious given the sheer number of Mahayana schools. Oh well... Tibet alone has at least five. Are you suggesting that there is only one school of interpretation in the Theravada tradition? Just because it is called the School of the Elders doesn't mean that it's one homogenous...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
It's all a game of factions. I illustrate with this bit because it shows how there's no end to the circularity proliferating. The other prob is that bc there is no standard textual reference, there is no law to rely upon, only men in the know. So the cultism is built into this approach. So you say,...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
This sort of pseudo logic is characteristic of the whole of Mahayana. Not that you have shown. Referencing one obscure sect is hardly indicative of the whole of the Mahayana, all of the Mahayana schools. This bit of tenet is just one school. There is no single Mahayana school. Yes, you state the ob...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
As much as I love Śramaṇa Zhìyǐ, he had a very curious idea about the orderings of Buddhist texts, and when which dispensation was taught, and where. His ordering was: 1) Avataṃsaka & related sūtrāṇi, 2) the Āgamas, 3) the Vaipulya sūtrāṇi, 4) the rebuking of the Arhants, 5) the Mahāprajñāpāram...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
Do give a quote or two to show exactly what this "certain sect" actually has to say. I just did. There's no book to quote bc this sect is all about the oral instructions. But the presentation is based on Gongchig. Well, thank you, good sir. That looks to be one sub-school of a larger scho...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?
Here's one of my favorites. A certain sect says, Buddha taught cause and effect in the first vehicle. In the second, he taught cause and effect is emptiness. And in the third vehicle he taught emptiness is cause and effect. This is a contradiction. Some might say the second should be he taught the ...
