Re: Resistance
Great, i think we have similar thoughts, at times. As for how to categorize your feeling of resistance, I might relate my experiences. I do try to note kilesas/defilements accurately, and find this helpful in my practice. When sitting, at times, I might allow myself a moment (just a moment or two) t...

Re: Resistance
I am a little unclear on exactly how your issue of resistance to impermanence etc. arose. where you in a sitting or was it more general reflection? in my limited experience, when i am sitting (and noting, as in the mahasi sayadaw tradition), i might feel resistance but it is experienced in terms of ...

Re: evening vipassana leading to yoga nidra like situations?
Thanks Kim. I think meditating earlier would be best as well, but I would be very lucky to wake up in the morning without waking up my toddler as well. It does look like the tibetan sleeping practices are distinct from yoga nidra. I am also a bit unclear on what yoga nidra is, exactly. It seems very...

evening vipassana leading to yoga nidra like situations??
Hello, I've re-committed myself to a daily vipassana practice over the last two weeks. I have been meditating for a couple of years, but mostly it has been irregular. My question basically comes from the fact that I meditate in the evening, before bed. So about 10pm for me. I find that this frequent...

good acronym for remembering right speech?
I have been working on practicing right speech, which is really hit or miss for me at times. Importantly, I find it helpful to remember some of the specific phrases used in the suttas describing what is right/wrong speech. In the last couple of weeks, I have tried using an acronym as a memory-device...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
Coming back to this thread over the weekend, I was a bit strident earlier talking about Ayya Khema etc. Sorry about that! Please chalk it up to enthusiasm. To Alan ... I definitely see where you are coming from with the stressful job and concentration being a reprieve from that. Yoga is a good break...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
Working at a retreat with an experienced teacher is one thing, working at home with books and forum advice is another. It is not a matter of "Don't try this at home." It is, however, a matter of realistic expectations of trying this at home, both in terms of what to expect and the pitfall...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
why do you feel this forum is not the place? all i notice is a lot of vipassana people who don't think it's necessary but other than that i've gotten some good info. what approach should i go with? I think this is a great forum, but as I said, I have seen you ask at least two questions about jhanas...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
To answer the OP's question directly. Yes. You can learn directly from the suttas. My example would be Ayya Khema . If you are interested in more explicit discussion about the jhanas then I would suggest googling her name (she was a buddhist nun, originally from germany, who passed away several year...

Re: Viṡuddhimagga Instructions on Metṭā
I believe Mahasi Sayadaw answers this question briefly, in his manual on Metta. (which is a book that can be found on the access to insight webpage, I believe). He is fairly brief, as I recall, and it is something like you cannot really wish good will towards someone who has passed on and is reincar...

I will have to re-read that book, thanks for the recommendation. I read some of it a year ago, but could review portions.

Re: "Yoga is better than meditation. Be your own teacher."
Hello all, Just wanted to agree with the general sentiment here. I have been doing a bit more yoga lately for stress relief and find it very helpful. I might take it one step further, actually. I have a tendency to do a lot of striving in my sitting, trying to immediately obtain calm from the breath...

Re: Buddha's advice on Brushing Teeth
This is interesting. Just for everyone's information, I wanted to mention that this tooth brushing issue was also addressed a great deal in Islam. (I am not Muslim, this is just my understanding). As some may know, Muslims pray multiple times per day, and I believe the use of the "miswak" ...

Re: Variations in the meditation practices of early Buddhists
I would be interested to see what responses you will get to your question. To answer it based on my limited knowledge, I would point to the first sections of the metta sutta, which as I recall, refers to 'those devoted to' different types of meditation. However, that seems to be a fairly short passa...
