Re: With harmonising communication - Samaggakaraṇiyā vācāya
Am I correct in saying that "karaṇāya" is the dative of karaṇa ? No, not here. When we are using karaṇa as a participial neuter noun then its dative singular forms would be karaṇāya and karaṇassa . Here, however, we're using it as a participial adjective and so it has to agree with the ge...

Re: Immortality
Can Theravadists not use the word soul? Theravādins can and do use the word "soul" ( jīva ) when critiquing certain wrong views. In particular, it crops up in connection with the two views, "The soul and the body are the same" and "The soul and the body are different"....

Re: Translators views
A simple question: Can a sutta translator avoid his own interpretations of the teachings while translating? No. In his letter [G] remarks that I explain too inductively, that I tend to look for my ideas in the Canon instead of deducing from the passages what they mean. This criticism, however, supp...

Re: With harmonising communication - Samaggakaraṇiyā vācāya
I'm a little unsure about using the instrumental ending for both samaggakaraṇi and vācā. Do you think this makes sense? Yes, you can say it that way if you want. But I think a better way would be with the participle karaṇa : samaggakaraṇāya vācāya The meaning is the same but it's more euphonic and ...

Re: sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā
That answer would not be my choice. That’s because the Dhamma is not at all summarised in that sentence. Actually it is. It's not surprising, however, that you can't see it, for to do so on a first encounter with a teaching-in-brief is only possible for an ugghaṭitaññū . For the vipañcitaññūs and t...

Re: sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā
There is a section in the Majjhima Nikaya where someone approached the Buddha and asked him whether he could summarize his teachings in, one phrase and, if he could, what it would be. The sutta you're referring to is the Cūḷataṇhāsankhayasutta, MN37. What is requested, however, is a Dhamma teaching...

Re: sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā
The Buddha replied that he could: "Sabbe dhamma nalam abhinivesaya"..... In Pali sources I don't think this is ever said of this passage. The one-sentence summary of the whole of the Dhamma is, sabbe sattā āhāraṭṭhitikā , "All sentient beings are maintained by nutriment." https:...

Re: Movie like monastery?
Anyone knows a theravada monastery so beautiful that it could be used for a movie?. In the 1980s when I was living at Wat Huai Bong in the Li District of Lamphun Province, our mother temple, Wat Phra Phuttha Bat Tak Pha in Pasang District, was used in the opening scenes of Rambo III. The old abbot,...

Re: "If we owned our body, it would obey our every command"
This ownership business is very problematic and again, I wonder what the Thai and Pali words are and whether "own" truly is a perfect match, or just a second-best translation that doesn’t really capture the original meaning and has us twisting Western languages to accomodate the intended ...

Do you know of any study group or further information to improve my understanding about this wonderful text? It's worth checking out the Patisambhidamagga references in Rupert Gethin's book on the thirty-seven bodhipakkhiya dhammas . https://archive.org/details/buddhistpathtoawakeningstudyofbodhipa...

Re: Appicchatā ca mettā ca karuṇā ca. ete santimagga
Appicchatā ca mettā ca karuṇā ca. ete santimagga "Contentment, loving-kindness and compassion. These are the path to peace" Is my grammar correct? Since the nouns in the first clause are feminine, the demonstrative should be etā . And in the second clause I think you'd be better served by...

Re: What is scanning? What is the Pali word?
The relevant words are pariggahaṇa for the act of scanning and pariggāhikā for the person who does it. Both are found in the commentary to the section on vedanānupassanā in the Satipaṭṭhānasutta. However, "scanning" is not really a translation as such, but rather an interpretation and appl...

Sorry, i don’t want to be rude. But unfortunately, none of the discussion has been cleared why the need for fasting. I think it was actually cleared up on Sunday, when Frank kindly posted a link to a page on his blog, on which all or most of the sutta passages relevant to bhojane mataññutā are conv...
