Re: Does Buddhism mean living in a cocoon
The short answer I came up with is: meditate diligently. Eventualy you'll get tired of frequently thinking about politics. It's an aversion generator and, yes, an agitation to the heart/mind. I also think that many rules of conduct, beyond the five precepts, that some buddhists follow, eventualy co...

Re: The Buddha’s teaching on metta
2. One should practice sila, and have the five hindrances suppressed before practicing metta: "That disciple of the noble ones, headman — thus devoid of greed/covetousness, devoid of ill will, unbewildered [not puzzled/confused/perplexed], clearly comprehending, mindful — keeps pervading the f...

Re: Bertrand Russell and rebirth
Does anyone else have a reason to believe in rebirth?
I don't have any reason to "believe" in rebirth but I have reasons to live as if it were true. It is a three dimensional model of cause and effect. Every physical, verbal and mental action has an effect in this life and...

Re: Practices to find and/or eliminate clinging
When I find myself suffering in any way I ask myself "what are you clinging to?" I see no point in randomly giving things up unless they are causing me to suffer.nem wrote:What practices do you use, to eliminate clinging other than meditation?

Change or expand the object and increase mindfullness. There are many stimulating things going on with the breath. Stop counting and notice them.

I routinely do it before. If I have a ling time to sit (> 1hr), I do it afterwards as well.

Re: Brahma viharas -- why?
I think the brahma viharas are probably necessary to cultivate sila that goes beyond and doesn't rely on precepts. The attitude that the brahma viharas cultivate is also the attitude we need to engage wisely and kindly with the world. So the brahma viharas are necessary to follow the path if you as...

Re: Brahma viharas -- why?
Hi: More generally, if the brahma viharas are pointless, why are they given such extended treatment in the Visuddhimagga, for example? Why practice them at all? This is an excellent question. I am in no position to give an authoritative answer but my understanding is that the brahama viharas can be...

Re: Satipatthana and Personality Type
My question is how one determines for this purpose if they are an introvert or extrovert and slow or quick. I'm aware of Myers-Briggs, but perhaps that isn't most appropriate here? Thank you. Mojo For me the Myers-Briggs is a good indicator, but that may because I am on the extreme end of the intro...

Re: Usefulness and dangers of "noting" techniques
It's just a tool...use it when it makes sense. Don't be hampered by it. Frankly, I'm not a big fan of noting...I've felt it takes me out of the direct experience. However, it has it role...especially when developing concentration and you get a distracting thought and you just note "thinking&qu...

Re: The obligatory Dhamma themed movie thread
The Big Lebowski is subject of a new book--it's more Mahayana. 'The Dude Abides' I have not read the book yet but after years of being obsessed with this movie, I finally see an authentic dhammic connection: in spite of his complete lack of classical discipline, The Dude does not create kamma. With...

Re: Acceptance of "Negative" Qualities
It will be difficult to show love and compassion towards everybody, myself included . One protects oneself, in this sense, via satipatthana & not the brahmaviharas. I thought of Satipatthana as well. 3. The Contemplation of Consciousness "And how, O bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu live contemplat...

Any ideas? :anjali: I did a metta retreat some years ago and I had a very intense emotional experience like you describe. I found tha...

Re: Can Mindfulness be unpleasant?
In the case of sati taking for example dosa, aversion , as an object, immediatly that sati arises the dosa falls away momentarily. It may come back but at the moment of sati arising it has gone. This is sometimes called tadanga nirodha, momentary cessation Maybe I am operating with an incorrect def...

Re: Can Mindfulness be unpleasant?
According to Abhidhamma it is impossible for any mindstate associated with sati to have unpleasant feeling. It can only come with either pleasant or neutral feeling. Subsequent and preceeding mindstates could of course be with dosa and have unpleasant feeling Yes, I think that is quite correct. kin...
