Re: How is Thanavuddho today?

Greetings, I disrobed about half a year ago. In the end the decision was entirely my own. Even though I ended up in a difficult situation as a monk I could have stayed in the robes if I would have wanted. But I had started to question celibacy and other aspects of monastic life and didn't feel comfo...

Re: Phra Ajahn Mitsuo Gavesako leave the Buddhist monkhood?

Greetings, I just read the news today. I knew Ajahn Gavesako from Thailand (not very well...). Watching that photo of him and her riding those horses made me laugh. Not in a contemptuous way... We where just talking about senior monks disrobing back in Australia. I think some of us are quite used to...

Re: Inspirational quotes from other religions/philosophies

The authorities teach that next to the first emanation, which is the Son coming out of the Father, the angels are most like God. And it may well be true, for the soul at its highest is formed like God, but an angel gives a closer idea of Him. That is all an angel is: an idea of God - Meister Eckhart

Re: Thai Buddhist Monks Struggle to Stay Relevant

Greetings, Young monks want the use of technology, such as smart phones which their friends have. You can see them sending IMs to their friends outside their temples. Some have WiFi. Thais love Temples to look big and colourful, the bigger, more golden statues the better. Personally I would rather g...

Re: Buddha's Bones and Piprahwa Jewels - auction?

Greetings, I have noticed this too with the so-called relics of Buddha, Sariputta, Moggallana, etc. There are so many temples with supposedly bone fragments of the Buddha that if they are real, the Buddha must have been about 1,000 feet tall to produce so many remains. According to one theory the re...

BACK IN THE DAY

For days on end
I used to spend my time
doing absolutely nothing.
It is that simple.

Re: Sutta Central

Greetings,

I am wondering if this site could become like accesstoinsight.org? It seems they are making use of content in other pages as well.

I AM GETTING OLDER

Green pieces of glass
from a broken Sprite bottle
scattered around a flat rock
like pearls from a broken necklace.

The same story everywhere
around the world
from the 1980's to the present.
Nothing has changed.

THINKING

What is the point of thinking
what others think
about you?
I am my own teacher
questioning myself.
I have to take responsibility
of my own life.

Re: Documentary: Half a Year of My Life (2005)

Greetings, In the U.S. where there is no conscription, it is seen more as a career move, especially for officers and they are getting better educated, many with Master's degrees or higher. And perhaps as a result you find more officers reluctant to go to war, although the politicians are another sto...

Documentary: Half a Year of My Life (2005)

Greetings, I want to share a documentary with you. We made it with my sister about ten years ago. We recently added English subtitles to it. Many of my non-Finn friends have heard about my experience as a "total objector" to the compulsory Finnish military service. This film gives a little...
