Re: Wandering Buddhist Renunciants
This may be a bit of a strange question but for those that don't want to formally ordain under the Vinaya but wish to practice as a Renunciant (10 precepts) is there a special term for these people? "Anagārika" is the most widely used term. Those who call themselves so may be observing ei...

Wandering Buddhist Renunciants
This may be a bit of a strange question but for those that don't want to formally ordain under the Vinaya but wish to practice as a Renunciant (10 precepts) is there a special term for these people? I have heard people refer to some lay people that live monk like lives and travel monasteries/live ce...

What was that Sutta that talks about what to trust
There is a certain sutta or passage that deals with what to trust.
It has something like "Don't trust things people say because they say them, don't trust rituals or tradition, don't trust sacred texts, Don't trust logic, etc."

Anyone in their quilty pleasures know of any good source for the sutras...

English Sutta Chants
Hey everybody, I was wondering if anyone has any good sources for sutta chants. I remember while visiting a ajahn chah monastery the chanting was quite an experience. Would love a source of English audio of Theravada chants :) Or it can be in pali as much of that chanting was. Though it would be nic...

Re: Nibbana as awareness!
SarathW: I have no idea what nibbana is lol. And I think the Buddha was right when he never talked directly about it because it defies words (Unconditioned). But I think there is something to be said about writing things like the above masters have. It helps I think in developing the right path to N...

Re: Nibbana as awareness!
Awesome Mike, To add to this flow ; ajahn sucitto also has one where he talks about energy and talks about the Mahayana view of samsara and nibbana being the same thing in one of his dharma talks on dharmaseed. http://www.dharmaseed.org/teacher/9/talk/15005/ I believe that is the one. I should note ...

Re: Nibbana as awareness!
P137 In listening to dzogchen teachings it is clear that the aim of the practice is to establish the mind in ‘innate, self-arising rigpa’; this latter word – for which the Skt. is vidyæ and the Pali vijjæ (transcendent knowing) – is variously translated as ‘non-dual awareness,’ ‘innate wisdom,’ ‘pur...

Nibbana as awareness!
Haha excuse the exclamation mark. I just thought it may attract more attention ;) Recently we have been hearing a lot of Nibbana as being "awareness" (Ajahn Amaro, and others) can anyone help to make this a bit more clear. I feel like I am missing some critical sentences to help really del...

Re: The Earliest Vinaya
Thanks Kumara!
I wonder if there has been any developments or scholars like Frauwallner that deal with this kind of early history.
If I remember some time ago a thai nun translated the bhikkhuni Patimokkha of each vinaya. I may see if I can track down her name

Re: The Earliest Vinaya
Bhikkhu Pesala: Thank you for the wonderful quotes from the tradition. I still remember the "“Not to do any evil, to cultivate good, to purify one’s mind, this is the teaching of the Buddhas.”183 This was one of the first quotes of the tradition I ever learned and still acts as a huge inspirati...
