Re: New book: Kawanami, Hiroko (Ed.), Buddhism and the Political Process (2016)

Kawanami's conclusions on Burmese post-independence political reform in U Nu’s Liberal Democracy and Buddhist Communalism in Modern Burma : U Nu’s political endeavor more than half a century ago tells us about the struggle of a visionary who was ahead of his times. His ‘Buddhism’ was also idealistic...

An excerpt from Ch 3 on the condition of nirodham sacchikaroti . “A sequence of texts in the Numerical Discourses names twenty-one householders and adherents ... who have found fulfillment in the tathāgata, have become seers of the deathless, and go about having beheld the deathless. Re: Stephen Batchelor's “After Buddhism.” Yale University Press, 2015

Thank you, Dhammanando. The text I quoted comes from Chapter 3, not Chapter 4, and I suppose I ought to have read a bit further, in which case I would have come to the text you quoted back. I appreciate Batchelor's acknowledgement that his is not a traditional interpretation and look forward to seei...

Stephen Batchelor's “After Buddhism.” Yale University Press, 2015

I ran a search of the forum but as yet see no threads related to Batchelor's new book. If this belongs elsewhere, I trust the moderators will move it. I'm still about a quarter of the way in so cannot offer a review. In fact what I'd like to do in this post is ask a question about something that see...

Buddhistdoor Global | 2015-10-29 | From mro.org A recent Buddhist Society conference in Britain entitled “Mindfulness: Secular, Religious, Both or Neither?,” which examined the remarkable growth of the secular mindfulness movement, sounded a note of caution about a lack of regulation in the training...

Can We End the Meditation Madness?

I AM being stalked by meditation evangelists. They approach with the fervor of a football fan attacking a keg at a tailgate party. “Which method of meditation do you use?” I admit that I don’t meditate, and they are incredulous. It’s as if I’ve just announced that the Earth is flat. “How could you n...

Possibly. But the statements are clearly categorical: It is impossible, monks, it cannot come to pass,...

Re: Senior Thai Monk proposes a law to imprison or fine those who criticize monks.

The call to let monks touch (or use) money is perhaps arguable. But he goes off the rails when he uses this to then conclude that the state should then _give_ monks money.

Re: Two arahants who are Fully Enlightened Ones in one world system - Why is this not possible?

Thank you for clarifying, Goofaholix, and for the reference, Sylvester. To summarize the Milindapanha: 1. Because the world could not support or bear this much virtue. (One might then ask how it is able to bear the virtue of thousands of arahats, or how much virtue can the world withstand? Is there ...

Two arahants who are Fully Enlightened Ones in one world system - Why is this not possible?

I understand the Buddha _said_ this is not possible. Were any explanations offered in the suttas? Any commentary? It is impossible, monks, it cannot come to pass, that in one world-system, at one and the same time, there should arise two arahants who are Fully Enlightened Ones. AN - Book of The Ones...

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction: Burma's 'great terror' moves a step closer

Burma’s worst nightmare came a step closer to reality when a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban’s most hardline faction called on the oppressed Rohingya to “take up the sword and kill in the path of God”. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/burmas-great-terror-moves-a-step-closer-as-taliba...

Re: Persecution of the Rohingya

The govt now realizes the consequences to its international image of allowing refugees to leave, and so is confining refugees to camps where they are essentially left to die. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/13/world/asia/myanmar-to-bar-rohingya-from-fleeing-but-wont-address-their-plight.html#" o...
