Re: Gravity and Impermanence?
I have a philosophy club at my school and in today's meeting I said that almost everything is impermanent. One person disagreed saying that the law of gravity is permanent it was always here and always will be. I said gravity is dependent on mass therefore it is not a permanent self sustaining forc...

Re: Rapture and bliss.
Nope, they are clearly distinguishable.reflection wrote:I agree with Ajahn Brahm's explanation of jhana and he states that piti and sukkha are indistinguishable until third jhana. Until that point they occur together as if one.
piti= joy
sukha= satisfaction caused by joy
EDIT: I meant joy (extreme happiness)

Re: natural progression of meditation?
jhana is impossible, let alone rare if one is not experiencing genuine pīti and sukha... So how would you describe genuine piti and sukha? vitakka is precisely your "skeptical thoughts", vicāra is precisely the "lasting conclusion" to your "skeptical thoughts", pīti is...

Re: natural progression of meditation?
jhana is not easily achieved, it is rare. If it were common, there wouldn't be so much different opinions. jhana is impossible, let alone rare if one is not experiencing genuine pīti and sukha. From what i see, nobody has ever been able to experience genuine pīti and sukha during meditation includi...

Re: natural progression of meditation?
i'm SO sick of all the conflict and confusion regarding jhana interpretation. i find that there is so much confusion that there will never be a 100% resolution without a time machine or until metteya shows up. that being said, what happens if i just give up and watch my breath and do nothing else? ...

If one tries to eat one cake after another cake, then very soon what was sources of pleasure will feel painful. If...

Re: Buddhism and apathy?
One of my friends studies Buddhism for a world religions class he is taking, and when we were conversing he mentioned Buddhism often pointed to signs of apathy ( lack of feeling or emotion/lack of interest or concern) I said this is not always the case since Buddhism often advocates the virtues of ...
