Re: Visiting Wat Padhammachart in La Puente, CA
Hi Hiker! I live up in Tehachapi and work in Lancaster, but I get down to the Long Beach / Los Angeles with my wife and kids about one weekend per month to visit the parents and in-laws (they live around the corner from each other). We will be down for MLK Day weekend this month. I have not been to ...

Re: Going from Mahayana to "Secular Buddhism" to Theravada
Thanks all for the great suggestions! I will be checking out the links and the Sutta study group here at Dhamma Wheel. I'm also hoping to find some good Android apps to support my practice while I am at work (I supervise social workers in the field of child abuse and neglect investigations, interven...

Going from Mahayana to "Secular Buddhism" to Theravada
Hi all, I've been away from the forum for a while but have been keeping up with my practice. I came to Buddhism through the Japanese Mahayana schools of Jodo Shinshu (Shin Buddhism, which is a Pure Land sect) and Rissho Kosei-kai (aka RKK, which is a Lotus Sutra centered group). Due to the fantasica...

Re: Hoza - Practical Application of Buddhist Teachings
Mindfulness has been found to be a powerful tool in the treatment of particular mental health concerns (as well as coping with other health issues). The scientific research out there in this area is very encouraging.

Re: Hoza - Practical Application of Buddhist Teachings
Excellent questions Ben! To got to your second question first - I absolutely agree with you! However, most of the American general public (at least) seem to have this overall impression of Buddhism based upon a lack of exposure as well as cultural bias/stereotype. And obviously they would not know a...

Hoza - Practical Application of Buddhist Teachings
I'm going to share an idea/practice that I learned while studying with a Japanese Mahayana Buddhist group but fits in well with a Theravada Buddhist practice. It is something that we all probably do at some level informally but makes more of a formalized process of it and makes it workable within a ...

Re: Members Bios - please contribute yours
Hi all, I've been a lurker on the board for quite a few months so I thought I would post a short bio. I was raised Mormon but was spiritually seeking even when I was young. As a kid I read Socrates and Plato, the BIble and Book of Mormon (both from cover to cover), the Qur'an, the Upanishads and the...

Re: Lay Practice at Home
A while back I made a little booklet for chanting that had a preliminary homage and the Discourse on Loving Kindness for the morning and a closing homage and the Five Recollections for the evening, as well as a guide to the Uposatha days, precepts, refuges, etc. I could upload it for you somewhere ...

Re: Going from Mahayana to Theravada
Thanks for the welcome! I will review some of the suggested resources and will post more as I feel led and am able (I'm going through a bout of bilateral renal stones and am on pain medication while I wait for my surgery on Thursday morning so I am often tired, groggy, and in pain). Kidney stones ar...

Scanning through this thread and the metaphysical speculation, it seems to remind me of the parable of the poison arrow. Deal with the dukkha.

Lay Practice at Home
I first learned about Buddhism through Japanese Mahayana Buddhist lay schools which focus on home-based "liturgical" practice in front of the altar so I am looking for something similar in the Theravada traditions. I would think it would include the recitation of the Three Refuges (with pr...

Looking More Closely at Theravada
Hi all! I first started studying Buddhism through the Japanese Mahayana Buddhist traditions (Rissho Kosei-kai, Nichiren Shu, Jodo Shinshu, etc.) but I have found myself increasingly drawn to the teaching and practice style of Theravada Buddhism. I am still very grateful for the teachings and I think...
