Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

....Usually the same people who have a fundamental religious devotion to the cult of the PhD. Funny thing about the "cult of the PhD", is that the primary concern of the sciences is to investigate things as they are, rather than to cling to speculative metahpysical views. Rather in line w...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

Sure, but there is nothing in that that negates rebirth (without atta). It declares it a speculative wrong view, in the discussion of eternalistic views prior to the quote. It's just that you have declared an Atta that is reincarnated, merely calling it not-an-Atta. Thank you for sharing your opini...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

[The Buddha] taught that the path is progressive, that views need to be left behind sooner or later. He taught that views get left behind by one who has known and seen, aka one who is sotapanna or higher . Are you claiming to be sotapanna or higher? Your direct source for this claim, please. Peter ...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

Buddhadasa followers aggressively pushing what they said were Buddhadasa's views as if they were the only truly true way to approach the Buddha's Dhamma, anything else being simply wrong. Don't ask me. I am not a Buddhadasa aficionado. I hope that neither am I. The way you are using the word aficio...

Re: How are the views of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu regarded?

Some may not agree but that doesn't make rebirth an essential teaching for awakening. Depends what is meant by essential teaching. I can be argued strongly, with considerable textual support, that rebirth (no atta needed) is taken by the Buddha as how the world works. On the other hand, it is also ...

Hi Stuka, Edited out excessively large font sizes. For the second time, Stuka, please refrain from this. It is discourteous to readers. Bhante, If you think that this font is somehow excessively large -- which it is not even close on the the monitor I am using here , as I previously told you -- the...

Re: The mechanism of gandhabba

Hi Stuka, Good thing you qualified that as "abhidhammic", Bhante. Alayavinnana was Asangha 's eisegeisis, in something like 4 BCE, according to Walpola Rahula, no...? The Yogācārin conception of the ālayavijñāna is of no relevance to this thread or this forum. Of course it is, given its s...

Re: Tensions within Modern Buddhism, Real or Illusory?

My view of the superiority of the Mahayana is terribly different from how I view Buddhism as a superior path to others. That would be a function of "I- and My-Making", rather than of clear seeing and knowing. Clear seeing and knowing is not in need of totalitarian censorship and Argumentu...

... no, but really. I'm getting bogged down here. Can anyone recommend a good, systematic and reasonably comprehensive introduction (or introductions) to Theravada Buddhism which you would put in the hands of a beginner? :reading: With thanks, Pererin Buddhadhamma: Natural Laws and Values for Life ...

Re: Dependent Origination

In particular you will see that Jati can only mean birth, the sort of birth which for a human occurs in a mother’s womb: "Bhikkhus, from what do these four supports originate, rise, take birth and develop? "These four supports originate, rise, take birth and develop from craving. "Bh...

"Foolish man, to whom do you know me having taught the Dhamma like this. Haven’t I taught, in various ways that consciousness is dependently arisen. Without a cause, there is no arising of consciousness. Yet you, foolish man, on account of your wrong view, you misrepresent me, as well as destr...

Re: Dependent Origination

... you have consciousness and name-and-form acting as causes and conditions for each other, however, fabrications and ignorance are included under name. For me, a misunderstanding arises in the Pali. The Buddha spoke: 'anicca paccaya sankhara' . Only three words. Paccaya here is a verb. Buddha sai...
