Re: Pali Term: Sati

If Sekha sees sati "as serving only one purpose, which is recollecting," then I would strongly disagree with that. Sekha did not say that. I said that. Returning, if we instruct a person with no exposure to Buddhism to "be aware", that person will probably arouse a certain state...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

. Mindfulness as 'awareness' creates rigidity. Not in my experience. True, each experience is different. If one describes one's experience (which I am not recommending), then another can reply: "Yes, I have experienced that but there is experience beyond that". My point is I genuinely dis...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

You're right. Your translation differs from others. Thank you. But I see no need to enter into a discussion about this here because the verse states: "Mindfulness governs all dhamma". Practices are also dhamma. If you need me to explain the entire sutta to you, you may consider commencing...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

But there is a great difference in English between remembrance and awareness. If one is to hold on tenaciously to the former, the problem is that it may induce confusion for practitioners. I am in full agreement, here, Sekha, with your point. However, in my experience, it is sati as 'awareness' tha...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

As for awareness directed towards phenomena happening in the present moment, in my experience, this is definitely not sati. well then, we disagree. I am tired of addressing your baseless statements. Everyone knows what the definition of samma-sati is. Hello Sekha A poetic sutta at AN 10.58 (althoug...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

Remembrance is directed to the present perception of a 'past object' (instructions for example), whereas awareness is directed to phenomena happening in the present moment. The most advanced meditation teachers I know of all take sati in the sense of awareness/mindfulness. I don't see any reason to...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

I am digging the issue, and I find out that ekaggata actually does not mean 'one-pointedness' in some suttas, and that it is a mental state in which one still handles thoughts: AN 5.151 “pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato suṇanto saddhammaṃ bhabbo niyāmaṃ okkamituṃ kusalesu dhammesu sammattaṃ...

Re: Pali Term: Sati

I have already debunked this argument Sekha In my understanding, I see little ground, if any, to dispute Dymtro. 'Sati' is rememberance, recollection or mental preoccupation. In respect to meditation, particularly Anapanasati, it is to keep the mind preoccupied with each in & out breathing &...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

Maybe it's this -- the observational function of mindfulness keeps watch not only on the object itself, but on the mind doing the watching... DJ My personal view is how the scriptures about mindfulness are written have lead to the common view that mindfulness watches the meditation object. My readi...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

Where is this stated? Āraddhaṃ kho pana me, brāhmaṇa, vīriyaṃ ahosi asallīnaṃ, upaṭṭhitā sati asammuṭṭhā , passaddho kāyo asāraddho, samāhitaṃ cittaṃ ekaggaṃ Unflagging persistence was aroused in me, and unmuddled mindfulness established. My body was calm & unaroused, my mind concentrat...

Re: MN 117: a counterfeit

There is the case where a monk — having gone to the wilderness, to the shade of a tree, or to an empty building — reflects thus: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the stilling of all fabrications (= sabba·saṅkhāra·samatha) , the relinquishment of all acquisitions, the ending of craving, dispassio...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

This is completely baseless. I have quoted the relevent scripture around 3 or 4 times in this thread. How can these discourses be 'baseless'? :reading: you engage in debate by making unfounded statements that merely aim to contradict others. What about considering the possibility that we may simply...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

So, if it is a prerequisite to the first jhana that implies that thoughts subside - and the Buddha makes great deal of handling thoughts - why on earth would he keep total silence on the issue?. The suttas describe that thoughts subside prior to jhana. Vitakka & vicara in the 1st jhana are not ...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

I suggest keeping to the standard formula for the first jhana, which does not include ekaggata as a factor. You are overlooking the fact ekaggata occurs prior to the description of the jhanas. Āraddhaṃ kho pana me, brāhmaṇa, vīriyaṃ ahosi asallīnaṃ, upaṭṭhitā sati asammuṭṭhā , passaddho kāyo asārad...

Re: Concentration vs Mindfulness in the Visuddhimagga

I suggest you examine the Pali text before speaking falsely of the Buddha's teaching. I have. Stock phrase for the 2nd jhana: Vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ. The Pali translated as 'unif...
