Re: Scholarly Resources

I second this recommendation. It has helped me a lot with many articles/books by prominent practitioners and translations of many suttas.

Re: Is traditional learning a hindrance?

These are some questions that I've been battling with for a couple days and just now decided to get other opinions,.. 1] Are reading and other forms of mental stimulation like math and chess considered sensual pleasures? (including reading dhammic books) 2] Did the Buddha advise against secular (no...

Re: Doubting supernatural side of Buddhism

Hello, I was wondering if any of you actually believe in hungry ghosts, hell realm, magic, or other seemingly "supernatural" part of buddhism. I just can't imagine Buddha actually talking about this stuff. These stuff makes buddhism seem like other religions.(i.e jesus walking on water) D...

Re: Is this a betrayal?

Hello all, Happy new year. A partner causes a lot of suffering to the other person. The suffering partner, committing many wholesome deeds wishing himself to be free from this suffering in the future life. He is still doing his obligation in the present life as a husband but he wishes that he could...

Ask About Montessori

So I want some practice talking about Montessori while I'm in my training course, so ask me a question or two about Montessori education and I will try to give you a brief but informative answer. First, some background. Maria Montessori was a doctor in Rome, the first to graduate from medical school...

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

There is a difference between knowing about something and knowing it. A teacher once described it like this: A scientist can know all about a tarantula, it's classification, physiology, habits, etc. But the person who awakens to find a tarantula crawling up her arm knows " tarantula ." So...

Re: Does swearing at objects (computers etc.) considers as h

I recently noticed that I have a habit of swearing at things (computers, phone etc) :computerproblem: What is the Buddhist approach to this? Is this considers as harsh speech? I'm probably weird about this, but I try to treat the objects I own with respect, even going so far as to thank them on occ...

Re: Anurudha manapa kayika sutta

Thank you for your responses venerable Sirs. Yes, there is another sutta about Anuruddha in the Majima Nikaya so I think the one in the Anguttara Nikaya is the correct one. I hope to borrow it from our temple library and read it. with metta is this what you are looking for http://www.accesstoinsigh...

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

One of the problems with life is that towards the end all that was “good and pleasurable” in life comes back as a source of grief. Usually the more you have had the more you grieve. Lets say you have had a particular pleasurable experience early in life you will spend most of you life trying to rec...

About the worse is loss of a friend due to an 18-wheeler accident, but I was not particularly grieved by the incident. I thought I would be and was a little confused why I wasn't, but no, I have not felt grief or deep loss.

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

Have you ever experienced suffering (not pain, that is only one aspect of suffering)? How would you describe it? Undesirable would probably be the best description. Whether it's the presence of pain (as you said not the pain itself), the additional suffering from addressing the pain in a heedless w...

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

As long as you can stay disenchanted and not clinging.......and you continue to learn more about how experience manifests it seems from what the Buddha taught that you are pretty much guaranteed to escape samsara sooner or later so no need to worry about it. I'm fine with Nibbana being the inevitab...

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

Obviously there's different perspective depends on whether one was born a prince in one of those oil-riched Saudis royal families and never have to worry about getting a job, paying rents, bills, and all kinds of debts, etc. as opposed to being born a girl in those war-torn and famine stricken Afric...

Re: Dukha and Escape from It

Yeah we're all going to age, get sick, and die, but so what? As long as we are not attached to youth, health, and life, what is the big deal? No big deal at all, but most people who are old or sick or dying find that they are very much more attached to those things than they previously thought poss...
