Re: Chanting in fearful times
That's a terrifying story. I think you're right that something short and elemental is the right strategy. Anything that requires a lot of mental work is going to just fly out the window in some moments when I really need it. Right now I'm leaning toward: Anicca vata sankhara Upada vaya dhammino Upak...

Re: Chanting in fearful times
A good rule of thumb is that if you can remember any Pali, then the most terrifying bit of the experience is safely in the past, or the future. That's pretty funny, but I'm not so sure! The first thing that came to my lips was a Christian prayer like I would say as a kid. I just struck me I didn't ...

Chanting in fearful times
I had an especially terrifying flight the other day. Is there a good short chant I can do in times of peril? Especially something from the suttas? Thanks!

Re: Can Enlightenment Be Self Hypnosis
I agree that it's impossible to know for sure that someone IS enlightened. But it's possible to know if someone isn't enlightened! Someone who harms other living beings, fears death and pain, lies, teaches non-dhamma, indulges in sense pleasures. It's not proof positive, but it certainly weeds out a...

What are heavenly sounds?
In DN 6, Otthadha asks the Buddha why he has seen heavenly sights but not heard heavenly sounds. The Buddha confirms that there are both heavenly sights and sounds. I have a guess what might be meant by heavenly sights, but what do you think is meant by heavenly sounds?

Alex, Have you had a chance to visit Bhante Sathi in Mankato? He's a great teacher! I'm with the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center.
