Greetings, this is for a Facebook monk friend of mine from the UK. He is currently back in the UK due to his father passing away. Now he needs to return to Thailand to finish his Buddhist studies and needs help funding his trip back. If you are able to help, please give him a hand - he's about half ...

I've also talked to some recently ordained monks in Thailand who aren't really happy right now due to what's been happening over there. What has been happening over there? Perhaps: Martial Law in Thailand ? thailand political situation :anjali: Mike To name a few - there are some other things that ...

Re: Clarifying Buddhist position on prayer
I think you should consider the reasons why you want to pray and consider the reasons why you want to practice Buddhism, then consider if those reasons are compatible. They might be now but one day in future they might not. I usually use the terminology of paying homage to the Buddha as a teacher -...

Re: Doubts about existence of ghosts & super natural beings
I don't stress over this issue because it can't be proven one way or the other, so why worry about it? Same thing with the issue of rebirth - I can't prove or disprove it, so I don't worry about it. I try to live a good life and try to adhere to the Buddha's teachings. Nothing I have read thus far a...

Re: the great vegetarian debate
I think one of the major things that is different from how we used to eat meat thousands or even hundreds of years ago is that we don't know what happens to the animals we eat up front. All we physically see are neatly packaged bits of flesh at the grocery store. Here is an interesting video: https...

Re: Identity politics and 21st century Theravada
Hi Mr. Man I think MP is pointing to a very important fact. We should not turn our blind eye to this far enemy. Buddha worn against all three aspect of Maana. I am superior, I am inferior and I am equal. I colored that quote because it's perfect. The solution to discrimination is not to pretend eve...

"In the case of Arpat, the committee thought it could destroy Buddhism. But for others, the film may be interpreted as a promotion of the religion," he said. "The audience should have the right to judge it by themselves." http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general/734420/arpat-upro...

Re: Doubts about existence of ghosts & super natural beings
I generally have issues believing in the supernatural and so I take this view - if you do what you are supposed to do, you will be taken care if there is something after death. Hey Tat! The only supernatural reality that matters in Buddhism is Right Release - faiths works there until Right Gnosis -...

Re: Why one meal a day?
Yes, but a baby's nutritional requirements versus those of an adult are completely different ;) A baby's nutritional requirements vary in nutritional quantities compared to those of an adult—in large part due to its size—but it is basically the exact same micro- and macronutrients. Even if this sta...

Re: Why one meal a day?
The fact is that there is a scientific controversy regarding the possibility of deleterious health effects of saturated fat and cholesterol consumption. A quick search on PubMed and Google will verify this to be true. To portray the science as being settled or to say that cholesterol and/or saturat...

Unless someone is vegan, you can get B12 from dairy products (milk, cheese, etc.) and eggs, so eating meat is not a necessity. You can also buy cereals and most of them are fortified with B12. Even if vegan, some tofu has B12 in it.

Re: Doubts about existence of ghosts & super natural beings
From the Apannaka Suttam link posted above, this sums up my views on this: “A wise man reflects thus: ‘If what these recluses and Brahmins say is true, and there is another world, then on the dissolution of the body after death they will be reborn in a happy destination, or in heaven. Even if there ...

Re: How avoid to say bad words when we are angry?
I've been trying to be more active in my Buddhist practice in the last few months. One of the things I have a tendency to do is to use profanity (no particular reason, just something that has been adopted into my speech over the years). So what I have been doing to keep that in check is that, when I...
